Toolbar question - Links

Dani

Two questions regarding the "Links" toolbar in Internet
Explorer 6:

1. Is it possible to have more than one toolbar
of "Links?" Or, if you have more Links than will fit
across one screen with the window fully expanded, can you
go to a second row? Or even add some of the extra Links
to another toolbar that isn't being fully used?

2. Is there any way to get rid of the text labels for
Links entirely? Most of the Links I have are for sites
with their own logos/icons - for example, if you make a
Link to MapQuest, it has a stylized "M" as the icon. So I
really don't need the word "MapQuest" next to it, I know
what it is. Same for Google. You can also put your own
icons in, so, for example, for MSN Directions, I changed
the IE "e" to a tiny little "Route 66" icon, and for
Dictionary.com, I found a little book icon with "A-Z" on
the cover.

But for whatever reason, even though I *can* rename the
label, I can't seem to *delete* the text label
altogether. Is there any way to get around this so I can
use the room for more Links rather than labels?

All suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

1. No. No. Yes, if the toolbar is suitable. I assume you mean a third
party toolbar.

2. No. You need a text label as it is a filename, just like other
Favorites names are file names. You cannot have a filename with no
characters. It can be one character but not less.
I seem to remember getting about 24 links on the Links bar, though I
only have a dozen plus a couple of folders with more at the moment.

Alan:

1. Phooey, Phooey, and no, not necessarily. Could be the
Address bar, could be the Yahoo! toolbar...whatever
doesn't go all the way across. If it's doable, how does
one accomplish this?

Oh, and what do you mena by "suitable?" What qualifies
as "suitable?"

2. Well phoo! I understand they need to name the file,
but why do they need to use the same thing for the file
name as for the shortcut? I mean, how do they let you
have no text labels for the Standard Buttons, but not for
the Links?

How'd you get 24 Links on a toolbar?

And what do you mean by having "a dozen [Links] plus a
couple of folders with more?" Do you mean that instead of
some Links, you have folders containing *several* Links
(presumably grouped together in some fashion that makes
organizational sense for you?)?

Does this mean I could, say, have a "Maps" folder which
contains Yahoo! Maps, Yahoo! Directions, MSN Maps, and MSN
Directions, each only two clicks away? Or one containing
all the reverse phone directories I have bookmarked?
'Cause at least that would give me something a bit less
crowded and easier to access than going through my whole
Bookmarks list.

Phooey?? Do you expect an answer?
I will ignore your "phooeys" for the moment and assume you are not
being derogatory.

A suitable toolbar is one you can add shortcuts to.
(Sorry, I don't feel inclined to chase after one right now)

Your comment on "whatever doesn't go across" makes no sense to me.
The width of a toolbar is determined by where you put it. I like my
Links bar full width.
My current setup of three rows is:

Button Bar (full width)
Links Bar (full width)
Menu Bar (about a third of the width) || Address Bar (about 2/3)

The name you see is a file name. I have already told you that.
It is not a matter of using the same thing. They are the same thing.
A favorite's name is the name of the favorite file. Have a look at the
Favorites folder in Explorer and see what I mean.

The text on a text button is not derived from the filename but is a
Registry entry.
That is not the same thing.

You get 24 favorites on a Links bar by putting them side by side.
I just tried it and managed 25 (a to y) without the >> showing.

Yes, you seem to have grasped the idea of the folders on the Links bar
but why don't you just try them? Create a folder on the Links bar and
drag some shortcuts into it.

1. Sorry, Alan, the Phooey was simply an expression of my
disappointment, so yes, please do ignore. Not directed at
you, but rather at MicroSoft.

Re: whatever doesn't go across...I meant any toolbar that
doesn't take up the width of the screen. My setup at the
moment is:

Button Bar || Menu Bar || Address Bar (each about 1/3)
Yahoo Companion Toolbar(2/3) || Earthlnk Popup Blcker(1/3)
Links (full width)

What I meant was, say I moved my Address Bar down so it
was all by itself, but I sized it to 1/2 width. Is there
a way to fill up the other 1/2 with Links in addition to
those on my Links Bar?

2. I'm not sure what the Favorites file names has to do
with anything, but the fact that the text on a button is a
function of the Registry is something I didn't know and
now that I do it makes sense why I can get rid of the text
there and not on the Links. (Well, inasmuch as MS makes
sense, anyway.) Thanks for clearing that up.

About the folders...okay, excellent. But how do I create
a folder on the Links Bar? It's probably something really
obvious that's right in front of me, but nevertheless, I
haven't found a way to do that yet. I'd appreciate it if
you could tell me how to do that.

Thanks!
