I concur. The attempts by the aforementioned posters to "get back to
freeware" after the PL temper tantrum has instead turned the group into
nothing more than a laundry list of all the freeware links these guys
can copy and paste, with little or nothing of value. If that's all I
wanted, I'd just go read a website list.
I also completely agree with you. I remember the good old days when I could boot up my PC, download 50 or so headers for the day from A.C.F. and do a quick check of the day's new posts to see if there were any new freeware sites out there; if there were any announcements about popular programs such as a new version, bug fix or whatever; and if there any requests for a program to a job (unless it was a .wav to .mp3 or vice-versa!! of which you are sure to get at least one per day).
Nowadays it seems that I have to allocate an hour or so to browse the posts, and even then I often find no freeware sites, just 150 individual programs posted separately by the same 3 or 4 posters - usually with no description in the header as to give an idea of what the program does.
I find that I am more frequently using Google groups, or visiting well known freeware sites, to do a search to find a specific product that meets my needs instead of downloading & wasting my time looking through A.C.F. headers such as ShowMyDT & N.E.W.T., both posted by "Tramp". WTF do these programs actually do? I have no idea as I just delete those messages as useless.
A.C.F. used to be a necessity for those who wanted to be able to use programs without paying for them (either low income or just thrifty), but it looks like it might have finally reached it's use-by date.
