This NG has become NG for me

Yes, and they are not even so nice as to write an [ANNOUNCE] in the
subject as help for filtering. Instead, one has to filter the poster,
and still get all the replies. :(

Can you avoid the replies too? If so, how?

I think flooding is a bad thing. Good stuff gets hidden in the pile,
and non flooders don't bother to post so as not to add to the noise. I
will pay careful attention to ten carefully chosen posts; I pay very
little attention to a hundred.
Just because it is on topic shouldn't mean one does it casually.
Floods of Beatles in an mp3 group is a bad thing; floods of freeware
in a freeware group is a bad thing.

So, what particular programs do you want to discuss? Let's
start it right now right here :) I myself have had fun
taking about Firefox ... You know, everyone can start a thread
that they like...seriously, what types of programs are you
interested in? Let's go for a venture to find them, review
them, and dicuss them (and perhaps even make them :) sound
like a good idea?

Actually if it's discussions about specific freeware, shouldn't this
beling in ACFD (alt.comp.freeware.discussion)? If you wanted to discuss
Firefox, and why it's the browser to use, I think the discussion NG
would be best for that. This group is better to serve those asking
questions about which browser to use.
You can always start a dissussion that *you* are interested
in, I sure will try to join the discussion if it is something
that I am also interested in.

Again, starting discussions, IMO belongs in the discussions group.

I disagree. People are able to discern what they want from the posts.
Give 'em some credit.

I also filter out the annoying posts to preserve my sanity and
to save time. However, some of the flooders are good folks, and do
not deserve being permanently killfiled.

FWIW, I don't killfile any of the flooders. I assign their posts a
score a little below zero. I see their posts and can read them if I
have a lot of time to kill, but I can also get rid of all the
lower-scored posts with a keypress.
Oh, and never tell anyone you're plonking them. That's the best
way.

Absolutely. Killfiling isn't some kind of childish punishment; it's
just another tool to manage reading Usenet.

H-Man, you and R.L. are, um, both correct. I think "flooding" does serve
the spirit and purpose of acf; as long as its freeware then its on topic.

It can be done, but I don't think your newsreader supports it. You'd
have to filter using the References header, filtering anything that has
one of that poster's Message-IDs in it. Also, that's only possible if
there is something unique about the poster's MIDs.

In the case of flood posts, I doubt it's worth your time trying to
filter replies. Most of the flood posts are ignored, not getting
replies. When there is a reply, it often indicates that there's
something good about that particular post.

R. L.

However, what we can start doing (and I'm going to post
this else where so that other flooders see this) is to put
"mini" descriptions in the subject like, such as if its
another archive program, a notepad replacement, a game, a
directory utility, a screen saver, a kids program, etc.
Would that help ?

:) honestly, I think I am going to take a little break for
myself for a little while ... you know the flood sometimes get
me too busy, too. However, I will think of other things to
post just to have a variety of fun, e.g., interesting polls,
interesting questions and discussions, besides the ordinary
discussions. Just to make the ng more fun for myself :0)
and to spend sometimes to put up my own freeware and update
them for the folks here ...

and there are programs that never get mentioned or recognized at all until

probably better than whats on that so called pricelessware list. flooding

folks differ...I, personally, feel floods as overwhelming and
distracting. (ESPECIALLY when it is just a name with no description).
30-40 programs a day blur, rather than entice. And in 2 weeks they will
have dropped out of sight up the list as MORE floods come in. I have
been a regular reader and 'sometimes' poster here for ummmmm..5-6 years?
(Since BEFORE John Corliss started getting flamed by Mabbet & crew!!)

I am not a computer pro in real life, I just try to sort thru these
things to make life easier....put me down as one vote to kinda ease off
on the quantity in favor of fewer posts with reviews & such....if I
want to be inundated with choices, or need something special, I can go
to SOS or Henk's sites ..(or just ask here, as I have done a couple
times)

......just the opinion of one curmudgeonly old woodworker with a
fascination with what computers can do.....

I feel the same, however, the floods are, IMO, just part life here. Yes
I find them overwhelming at times, and therefore they annoy my, but it
is a small annoyance, it certainly does not affect my quality of life,
so I can deal with it. If those that do, want to continue, well then
I'll continue to quickly scan them and blow past them, until I find
something I might find useful. Better subject headers are always better.

I wouldn't know because with you it's hard to get a word in edge-wise. :)

In the past several weeks I find few postings from the people I found a
source of information. Instead, today I find over 1,000 posts, too many
of which come from Protean, R.L., Tramp and Vegard Krog, that relate to
individual programs that, for the most part, are of no interest to me.
Trying to review all of them is a time-consuming and frustrating
effort. A use of my time that I cannot expend.

I put these folks in my kill file for ~15 days. If it continues, they go
in the permanent one. ;-/

Thank you. I am always amazed at the attitude of "You're posting way to

Why?

One *can* have too much of a Good Thing. . .

Do beer lovers want to be drowned in a vat of beer?

Beer and freeware are completely different things. People come here for
freeware. That is what I post. With the use of filters, & bozo bins
there shouldn't be any complaining at all. No one is forcing anyone to
view any posts that they don't want to. I for one have no interest in
anything to do with Linux. So I filter those posts instead of crying
about the increasing number of Linux posts. If I do get interested in
Linux at a later time I can always kill the filter.

With the rate that some websites disappear, programs become shareware
posting should be encouraged. How many programs does SOS and
Pricelessware have that are "Last freeware version", "Last link on the
planet", "Last uncrippled version"? Quite a few to be sure.

This is the only newsgroup I subscribe to where posting on topic
information is complained about.

I can't keep up with the postings, but one thing that I'd like would be
a note as install or non-install. It saves a lot of time for people like
me, we have to usually start to download before we can make a guess that
it is a setup file. I've gotten to the stage that it's only if I
**really** need a utility, then I will install. Anything else, I don't
bother to try it if I have to install it first.
