I appreciate your comment Patty, but I'm not exactly a newbie, and I have
been running my own website for well over a year, and I think it looks
pretty
darn good. I didn't know squat when I started. My website is at
http://www.kinsmantile.com

I didn't call you a newbie. I just said that making images is a very basic
aspect of web design and that you were going about it the wrong way.
The instruction that Jim Buyens put in the book, he said, was for exactly
the reason that I'm trying to do it! (I think I quoted that part of the
book
in an earlier post.)

The instructions you were following are not what you need to be doing to
make a simple banner for a web site. There is absolutely no reason to use
ASP.net to make a normal GIF image.
What graphic program do I need (please suggest one) to do what your are
suggesting?

I like Fireworks. Photoshop is very commonly used, as is PaintShop Pro.
Good-looking images can be made with any one of those programs, but of
course you have to know how, which can be learned by reading the manuals and
experimenting (and/or visiting their online forums).

Mosto of my images have been optimized and resized using Irfanview. Anything
else I do is done right in FP2003.

What graphic program do I need (please suggest one) to do what your are
suggesting? It sounds simple, but when I tried it with Paint (which I think
is a lousy worthless program to use for anything) as someone suggested, I got
a very, and I do mean VERY, crappy image. Check my page. I want my company
name to look as good in my chosen font as it does now in whatever font it is
displaying in on YOUR browser (probably Times New Roman) I want the
Reservoir Grunge, or Boulder, which I used to use till it became unavailable.

So far, the answeres her have been less than helpfull, unless I can make
that .gif image from a graphics (tell me the name of a program) program look
good. So far (using Paint) it just doesn't. Obviously Paint aint gonna cut
it!

Hope this doesn't double post, as I messed up my first reply and tried to
get out of it. Sure could use an "edit" feature on this forum.

I use IrfanView for my image editing, but I also found a similar program
recently that I tink I like even better (does a lot more), also optimizes
etc., XnView

Thanks for the other suggestions.

Perfect! Exactly what I've been looking for.

As always, Thomas, the simple straight forward answer. I'll check out that
website to see what it's all about, but if my hunch is right, I can go there
to convert my text?

Thanks!

I did send an email to Jim at the address in "FP2003 Inside Out", but I
don't know if it is still a valid address. I did not receive a reply (yet),
but the mail has not been returned either, so it must be a valid address.

I know you didn't call me a newbie. My wife read your post and didn't react
at all the way I did, so I guess I took your message the wrong way.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check some of those programs out.
Unfortunately, I can't afford a big expensive program at this time; however,
many good programs are fairly inexpensive. Thanks again.

Actually, the link is to two images that you could use, the only thing is that I forgot to set the
font in your color.

Don't use FP for ANY image manipulation. And btw, don't use anything from
the Draw tool bar (text boxes, autoshapes, line...etc)

Yep I have Xn too.

Faststone is another good free one.

But lately I've been using ACDSee Pro a lot for organization and very good
color corrections - I take and deal with thousands of images a month so it's
great for me (cost a few bucks though). Since it also does easy batch
processing it's kinda replaced IrFanview (well, not really).

No, Thomas just made the images for you in his own graphics program, as
we've all been explaining is the simple, straightforward answer. :)

If I were you, I would design the logo in Excel (this has all the fonts
you will ever need!!) than copy it (Edit, copy or CTRL+C), then paste
in Paint. The paint program is in: START, All Programs, Accessories

Now you can save this as a .GIF file from paint.

You have Excel on your system right? If not you can download a trial
version from MS website to do the job and then you can delete it from
your system once the job is done.

Also, you can get trial vesion of Photoshop from Adobe website:

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Hope this helps.

EXCEL? You'd design a logo in a spreadsheet program?
That's plain silly.

For what he wants to do, EXCEL is the best program. Not silly at all.
All he has is letters as his logo!. Look here:

http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/kinsmantile/

I would just put text on the webpage, appropriately formatted, but for
some reasons he wants a gif file so he should get a gif file from
excel!. No need to spend $250 just for one logo!!

EXCEL is a very versatile tool and I know people writing their resumes
in EXCEL. Now this may sound silly but they are happy using it so it
be!!

Yes it is!!!

I use Excel to mow my lawn, wash the car, and cook dinner!

Patty, and all:
OMG, how dumb am I?
I think in my enthusiasm and excitement, when I found the section in the
"Insider Extras" about this little program, I wanted it to be the answer so
much that I believe I totally misunderstood what Jim Buyens wrote.

The crucial element I was missing in all of this hit me like a brick today,
as I was pondering everything and thinking about things you have allwritten.

The element I was missing is this: The font MUST reside somewhere for the
program to be able to use it. It can't create the font from thin air.
Therefor, no matter how good the program, if it can't find the font
somewhere, it isn't going to convert it!

I owe you all an apology, but you have taught me a lot just the same,
because it is the combination of all your posts that (finally) brought this
to light to me. I have a much better understanding of these things now, than
when I first posted my question.

By-the-way, my wife found the Boulder font on the internet and sent it to
me! Ha, ha. What is it about women? They always seem to be right in the
end and somehow save the day!

Thanks to all who have posted answers to me here. I know what to do now. :)

Yah you could probably mow your lawn with an electric carving knife too.

Using Excel to create graphics is as ridiculous as using Excel to create web
pages (which you could do...but would you? ahhh..NO)

He doesn't have to spend a dime, he can create the graphic with FrontPage
and Paint or any of the zillion free image or graphic editors out there.

Boulder was the font we used in the begining (when we first started our
company). Somewhere along the line, it became unavailable (we couldn't find
it anywhere). We had bought a new computer, and since the old CD from which
we had installed it in the first place was for Windows 3.1, we couldn't run
it.

Reservoir Grunge was the closest thing we could find to the look and
character of the Boulder (and I have no idea today where I found that), but I
had always hoped to someday find the Boulder again, which I liked very much.

Thanks, Thomas, I hope you read my post below (next one under Patty's).
Sheesh, I can't believe how dumb I've been here. I suddenly realized that
the font has to reside somewehre if a program is going to use it; so, no
matter what I did (except to do my own conversion to a graphic, as you all
have been telling me), a visitors browser is going to display the default
font.
