System restore error message

Hi, when i click on the system restore tab in system manager, I get

An exception occured while trying to run
"C:Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\Windows\system32\sysdm.cpl",System"

Can anyone point in the right direction please. I don't know when this
started as I have not tried to use SR before, but I was trying to help a
friend with another problem when I noticed this on my machine.

Thanks, Steve.

You can run system restore from the Help main page, or from the start menu

Steve: I had this same problem a few weeks back after installing SP2. Another
user helped me out with this:
I found this while googling groups for
""C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,control_rundll","C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl"
"
"Please follow these steps to reinstall the System Restore function.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, switch to Classic View and
double-click Folder
Options.

2. Under the View tab, click to check "Show hidden files and folders", and
uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files", click Ok.

3. Launch Explorer or double-click My Computer, locate to C:\Windows\inf,
right-click on SR (SR.inf) and select install.

4. If the system requests the XP CD, please insert the CD into CD-ROM and
finish
the installation according to the instructions.

I hope this helps."

Thanks TedG, that seems to have sorted the problem. Did you find out what
caused the problem on your system. The only thing that I have done recently
is install SP2.

I want to say its something about the SP2 installation. Something didn't get
reset properly or something along those lines. Could be machine specific, my
PC is a Sony VAIO desktop. I didn't even know mine wasn't working until
another program popped up saying it could create a system restore point and
showed me the same error message you got. Little bugs and glitches. It took
me three attempts to load SP2 on my machine, still don't know if it was worth
it.

system restore error is fixed

Thanks TedG and Steve.

I had the exact same system restore error recently. I follow the steps and it got fixed.

I suspect mine error was caused by following two possible actions I did recently:

1. Switch to new hard drive – I copied complete drive to the new one with Western Digital utility software. I wonder if something was not copied correctly.

2. Downloaded some mp3 song from a free download website – not a smart move!

One thing I’d like to mention is that after running the re-installation, the previous restore points were eliminated and the initial point is reset to the time the re-installation is done.

Many thanks to both of you for sharing the problem and solution.

Thanks,

Vincent

Wow. I found the solution here using Google. Thank You for fixing this problem. The other fixes I read all told me I had to repair the registry. I really didn't want to try that so I kept searching. Installing the SR.inf file did the job. I also copied my HD using the Western Digital software. It must not copy properly, just like others here have noticed. Anyway, my system restore is working now, a big Thank You is in order!
