System event errors STATUS_LOG_HARD_ERROR

If anyone here has suggestions for getting rid of the errors described below I would appreciate it greatly. If one believes Microsoft, the main obstacle seems to be identifying the offending driver (what strategy to adopt?). And if you have come across this problem before, or have ideas as to other leads to follow, I'd welcome the input

==================================================

Looking in the Event Viewer under System, there are runs of either four or six (the precise number seems to vary randomly from boot to boot) successive informational event #26 messages with the same timestamp. These appear on every cold boot (but not on restart) with the source identified as "Application Popup"

In the Description box for each event

Application popup: : Machine Check

Application popup: : Machine Check: Reg

(what is Regs: registers?). The events appear as successive pairs, with the first of the above messages for the first event and the second for the second, etc

On clicking the microsoft link in the Description box it says the file is ntdll.dll and on going to the ms site
