I am running Windows XP Pro with 2 gb of RAM on a Dell Inspiron 9300
laptop. I have Photoshop CS2, Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Pro, and Paint
Shop Pro 7 installed, as well as many other programs. The problem I'm
describing occurs when two conditions are met: when the computer has
been on for over 24 hours or so and when I try to launch all 3 of those
programs at the same time. Usually the 3rd program to be launched just
does not launch at all. When Paint Shop Pro or Flash is launched last,
it doesn't open. When I open Photoshop last, it gives me a fatal error
that refers to the Microsoft C Runtime Library. When one of the other
2 applications are closed, the one that previously failed then works.
When the computer has been restarted fresh, the problem does not occur
and all 3 programs work just fine at the same time, even if the
computer is still warm (probably not an overheating issue). I noticed
that some other programs (Internet Explorer, the start menu, AIM, etc.)
act funny when all 3 of the major applications are open if the computer
has been up for many hours. Everything returns to normal when 1 or
more are closed. I have no exact time that this behavior occurs,
sometimes it goes for longer than other times without the problem.
Whenever one of the 3 applications fails to load, this message is
placed in the Event Log. This is the only error indication that I get
(besides the Photoshop message). All programs have been reinstalled
and Windows XP had been completely reinstalled as well, all to no
avail. All software has also been updated.
The nature of this problem leads me to think that there is an issue
with some sort of shared files common to the entire system, but I can't
figure out where to look. Reinstalls obviously didn't correct the
error. Any ideas what to do?
