Hi all,
After making changes in selective startup so that only certain programs load
at startup, the system config window pops up when the machine boots telling
me that I've made changes. I know that I have made changes. How do I stop
this window from appearing every time the machine boots up? Do I check the
box, click ok, or just "x" out of it? I must be missing something simple I
am sure!
TIA
Matt

MSCONFIG is apparently only intended for troubleshooting startup related
problems.
It's not meant to be a permanent solution, or an alternative to editing the
registry manually.
So you'll get that message box at startup as long as msconfig is running a
cutom start-up.

Get the best tool for the job from

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Freeware too and only a 60KB download.

Martin.

Nexty time you reboot, and the popup hits, check the box at the lower right corner that says, " Do not show, blah blah, etc", and it will not show up again. But if you (in the future) make a change in MSCONFIG, then you will get that again, just remember to check the box each time after the you do the restart.

I had the same problem. So I installed autoruns.exe to eliminate programs I
did not want to run at startup.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting
locations of any startup monitor (A starting list of auto-run locations was
obtained from David Solomon's "Windows Internals" seminar), shows you what
programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you
the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones
in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can
configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell
extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications,
auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig
utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

From AUTORUNS.EXE Help file...

If you don't want an entry to active the next time you boot or login you can
either disable or delete it. To disable an entry uncheck it. Autoruns will
store the startup information in a backup location so that it can reactivate
the entry when you recheck it.

Person stated; ...'So you'll get that message box at startup as long as
msconfig is running a
cutom start-up.' Not so.... Check the box to not show this each time
WIndows starts and then hit the X at the top of the box and it will not
appear again unless or until you make further changes. I use this because i
get a lot of stuff added here that I don't want and have to go back into
msconfig to stop them from running. Except for systray, there isn't much in
msconfig that HAS to run at start anyway.. (Your anti virus program probably
should) I recently found 33 items in there on a buddies machine that
certainly didn't need to start with boot-up.
