Symbols indicating hard returns, etc -how to turn off

All of a sudden my emails that I create new or reply to show all kind of
wierd symbols indicating returns, next line, etc.
I don't know where I turned this on but it is irritating and I need to turn
it off.
My mail format is HTML and Word 2003, but in word these symbols don't show.

I use office 2003

After searching for previous posts, I found the following solution following
Vince Averello's answer to similar posts:
Open a new email, go to tools, options. On the first tab, which is view, in
the middle there is a section called: formatting marks. For some reason mine
had a check mark on all. I took it off, and the marks are gone.

Pressing Ctrl-Shift-8 is easier and does the same thing.
