svchost.exe error? What does this mean?

Jim Davis

I am running Windows 2000 professional. Every once and while I will
get an error message that will pop up: "svchost.exe has generated
errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the
program. An error log is being created." After this pops up on my
desktop, nothing will display correctly in the the Control Panel. Some
programs won't even launch afterwards. What does this mean and how do
I get rid of this problem? I've tried reinstalling Windows 2000
Professional, but the svchost.exe message came back. Thanks

It's free to sign up. They seem to get more replies.
From what I have read it could be Blasterworm virus. Check
out the link it may be helpful.

Here's what I found out on www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp
34804 files were scanned.

C:\Documents and Settings\...\WksPatch[1].exe virus:
W32/nachi.worm.b

C:\WINNT\System32\drivers\svchost.exe virus: W32/Nachi.worm.b
C:\WINNT\System32\enbei.exe virus:
W32/Blaster.worm.f

C:WINNT\System32\mslaugh.exe virus: W32/Blaster.worm.e

How do do I get rid of these viruses?

A virus enters your dailup port(s) and tries to search for a way to
send data out through the ports randomly and crashes. Some viruses may
even copy itself and then exit through email programs, infecting your
friends and clients.

Solutions:

1) Reinstall Win2000, run (free) ZoneAlarm http://tinyurl.com/kzq or
2) Download/Run Symantec (free) Blaster: http://tinyurl.com/jqks or
3) Download/Run Symantec (free) Welchia: http://tinyurl.com/ki96 or
4) Download/Run MS's (free) antivirus http://tinyurl.com/h5l9 or
5) Use AOL dail-up.

The first choice reduces time and conflicts and should solve it. But
run ZoneAlarm before dailing-up, I guess you know that. And search
your pc for msblast.exe http://tinyurl.com/2h2me in your system32
folder before going with choice 5.

If or when you get the shutdown message...

Go to; Start --> Run
enter; shutdown -a

This will halt the shutdown and give you a chance to Download the McAfee worm removal tool,
Stinger: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ or the Microsoft Lovsan/Blaster and Nachi/Welchia
Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8B-FE98-493F-AD76-BF673A38B4CF&displaylang=en
and install the following patch for the RPC/RPCSS and DCOM Vulnerabilities that are
addressed by Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-012 - KB828741
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828741 and finally
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-012.mspx

Please read: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

You also need a FireWall. If you don't patch the PC and not use a FireWall then you will
just be re-infected.

I also suggest the installation of *ALL* MS Critical Updates ASAP.

By paying attention and following instructions. Go to the sites already
given to you, READ and DO what they say to do.
