SVCHOST.exe Error Message

D

Don

I'm trying to get a lead on an error message that occurs
while I'm using my telephone line network connection. The
Error message is:

"SVCHOST.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart program. An error log is
being generated."

Error seems to be responsible for loss of control of my
terminal control icon that normally allows me
to "Disconnect" my network connection. Now I can
only "Disconnect" by restarting computer.

I got rid of mine once I downloaded the latest updates but they wouldn't
install properly unless I installed the one by one with the service packs at
the end. Now things are back to normal. Or as close to normal as might
want to surmise using MS products...:)

I had this same problem. You need to de-activate DCOM. Blaster is trying
to get into your machine remotely. Sadly the guy who coded it is a bit of
a lame cowboy and has made a really bad job of it. Blaster exploits a
security flaw in DCOM which Microsoft haven't been bothered to patch
properly. As far as I know nothing in the world uses DCOM so you can trun
it off. You need to download a Utility called DCOMbobulator. i can't
recall where from though. You can search for it in google though its quite
well publicised...

Good luck

You've got or had Blaster and/or Welchia and Microsoft's patch sucks I'm
afraid. Once Blaster has infected your machine it attacks you again from a
remote server. It exploits a vulnerability in the DCOM module. DCOM is
pretty useless for everything except Blaster, so it can be safely
deactivated. You need to download a utility called DCOMbobulator from

http://grc.com/dcom/

this will deactivate DCOM and stop the problem. You have to turn it off
and close the open port that it will find. I had this problem for about
six months before I found the solution so I know how frustrating it is.
This definitely works though!

Good luck

It is a program on grc.com. However, it applies to MS03-026 and not
the later MS03-029 patch. You may want to turn off DCOM for other
reasons, but this vulnerability has been fixed by a Microsoft patch.

Cheers,

Cliff
