Sun Java Console Crashes IE6

Hello:

I have Java J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 installed on Windows XP
Professional SP2
Pro.

When I click on the Sun Java Console in IE 6 under Internet options, IE 6
shuts down and the error report produced below appears on my desktop.
The same happens when I click on the download Java at the Sun Java website
for this program download. this also happens when i attempt to verify my
installation of Java from the Sun Java website at:

http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

How can I reenable Sun Java?

Any suggestions?

Uninstall update 6. It has caused problems for lots of people.

I only see the option to uninstall the entire J2SE Runtime Environment at
the Control Panel. I don't see an option for uninstalling Update 6 in
itself.

If it's recommended that I uninstall this entire program, how would I get
the pre-Update 6 Version?

The JRE Set Up Launcher on the Sun Java site is only for Update 6.

Thanks Jon. But I see several versions for JRE at that site. Would you
recommend I install the J2RE 1.4 or the J2SE 5.0 Update 5 ? Or some other
version?

I'm a bit confused as to which would be best to download after uninstalling
J2SE 5 Update 6..

I use :

Windows XP Professional Ed SP2 with 640 Meg RAM.

IE 6.0.2900.2180

I'll second what Vincenzo said - you'll want the JRE 5.0 Update 5
