Clicking on Sun Java Console causes IE 6 to shut down

Hello:

I have Java J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 installed on Windows XP
Pro.

When I clcik on the Sun Java Console in IE 6 under Internet options, IE 6
shuts down and the error report produced below appears on my desktop.
The same happens when I click on the download Java at the Sun Java website
for this program download. this also happens when i attempt to verify my
installation of Java from the Sun Java website at:

http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

How can I reenable Sun Java?

Any suggestions?

JRE update 6 has caused problems for some users. Uninstall it via
Add/Remove in Control Panel, and install a previous version from here:
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/
