Strange error message on boot

I am trying to fix a friends computer. He loaded AOL and nearly filled his
harddrive. Now the system won't boot XP. He is getting a message ARC
firmware boot config did not properly generate ARC for HAL and system paths.
Reboot system. Never can get past this message even trying the different
modes. Can anyone tell me what is going on?Thanks.
