SpyBot freezes up during updates

Hi all!

I have been trying to update my SpyBot from the access on my desktop,
but, it just froze up. I finally had to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the
task. I had to download the latest update from the website and then
manually install it.

I thought at first that it was because the site might be very busy
and not able to respond, but, over the last few days, I have tried it
at various times, and it still does freezes up during the download
process, and I wind up having to manually download

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a solution?

Best regards,
Jan :)

Very good description and a support forum as well:

I do not wish to appear so very dense, but, when you say that I should try
When you open Spybot S&D and click on search for updates tab, you'll see a
little arrow across the menu bar at the top.
Next to it will be a site, like UniDo(Europe). Click on the arrow and it
will bring up a drop down box that allows you to change the mirror site.
Try the one for FXClips (USA). It worked for me.

Thank you optikl....I think I've finally found it now...it won't stay
with that setting, I have to select it each time, but, at least I know
where it is now. I ran the updates and they worked ok, no locking up.
Hopefully, this will resolve the problem.

Funny how the Help didn't tell me that when I was trying to find out
how to change the mirror site. Guess I just didn't know the right
question to ask, or in the right words...???

Had the same problem until I started getting my updates from the
FXClips USA site. Haven't had a problem since. Get away from the
default UniDo Europe download site and try one of the others and I
think your problem will go away.

Yes, thank you TR,....that did work and the update went without a
hiccup. Do you know if there is a way to set that site as the default?
I can't find a setting to do this in the Help under the settings or
such. Fact is, I found all those additional buttons on a list bar the
left for Settings, Tools, Directories, etc., when I was in one of the
screens, but, when I went to do the update, the screen changed and
list bar changed and I can't seem to find that other screen or list
bar again. Ooohh..it is really frustrating... :-(

That is something I have not been able to find out how to do.
Actually, I don't think the program has an option to set that up.
However, it doesn't seem to be a problem to just select the USA site
each time there is an upgrade available.

Jan, it's not a very well designed GUI. So, I wouldn't put on a hair shirt
and beat myself, if I were you.
I plan looking at some other programs (payware) to see there is something as
effective or better, that's a bit less clumsy to use.

I went through that around a year ago and came up with SpyBot and
AdAware as the top two of which I run both because I find that SpyBot
sometimes catches stuff that AdAware doesn't and AdAware sometimes
catches stuff that SpyBot doesn't. However, both of these catch much
more stuff than any others that I tried.

Yes, the GUI of SpyBot leaves a lot to be desired but it sure makes up
for it when it comes down to doing what it is suppose to do....
catching Adware, Spyware, Dialers, Malware, Keyloggers, Trojans &
Usage Tracks. And in the Advanced Mode, you get automated scan,
removal and update.

Someone recommended a program by Webroot; Spy Sweeper. I'm probably going to
d/l a trial this week end.

....ahmm.....a 'hair shirt'??...ahh....well...nooo, thank you, but,...I get
the idea...<g>

True, the GUI leaves some to be desired...but, let's be honest...the folks
that provide the freebies are not really going to put everything into it, it
is more or less like test driving a VW Bug, or a RR, depending on what your
ultimate needs are. So, we have to realize that there are probably some
gaps in the quality or the performance to some degree between the freebie
and the one you open your wallet for.

Like you say, it really does ultimately do what you expect it to do...for
free...find and destroy. I also have the AdAware freebie, and yes, it does
sometimes find things SpyBot does not. So, I run them both and I feel that
I have covered most of the possible slugs that might be luring about. I also
have Zone Alarm (freebie), and AVG .0 (free version). I get far more
protection than I had with the McAfee paid program. I get all kinds of Swens
and spam on my Hotmail account, but, I have not had even a new Swen for the
last 2 weeks with my primary OE account. But...that's ok...I'm really bored
with them now anyway.

However, if you are willing to open your check book (on the web, aka CC or
PP), and pay for the 'whole wazoolie' real program...will you get a much
better GUI, an easier and more informative Help file, better support?? I
have been told by many who have done both, that the performance is not any
different...so guess that just leaves the icing Rosettes on the cake. <g>

Thanks for all your additional help and information. I may get the hang of
this yet..;-))

Got updates O.K.

I had the same problem, and adopted the same solution. Both the European
sites appear to be u/s right now.
The European site does not always fail, but, I'd say, 4 out of 5 times it
does. When it does, then I get the freeze job. It is just not worth the odds
to go there if the US will work any time. I do like the SpyBot and this
makes it much easier to keep it updated.

Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it.
