RTM.shtml
Google for "download windows xp sp2" and you'll be looking for "RTM"
(release to Microsoft groupies) and "266 MB". Some of these may be
faster than others. There are several out there, and you can also
request a copy of the CD, I think it's free, but it takes some time.
There's not a lot to tell about it - almost nobody's had problems (real
problems) with it - it's just mostly improvements on what's already
there. Networking, in particular, has vastly improved (hmm, improved?
perhaps "simplified" would be the better choice of words, especially for
home users like myself.)
During the install-dialogs you may have to crawl through the Windows
Firewall settings, and make some decisions on Microsoft's ideas regarding
"auto-updating" but 1) you always have a choice, and 2) you can always
change those choices via your control panel later.
Now, a little anecdote for your edification, and treats for the trolls if
they so desire:
I downloaded and archived a copy of the 266 MB SP2 RTM file. This was
primarily becuase of the flap Sun Java caused with the MSVM between SP1
and SP1a. I'm one of those who preferred MSVM to Sun Java because it
seemed smaller, faster and more reliable to me, therefore I preferred the
SP1 over the SP1a, which nuked MSVM basically, in favor of Sun's
perceptions. Now, I have a cleaner which flushes out Sun Java's caches
of all the potential virus and trojans which regularly occur in my
surfing hard-core porn sites and the like. JK. Free fonts, and redirects
and all that kind of jive that's out there these days seem to drop little
tid-bits in some of the more hidden files... Whatever, the point is that
now it's resolved.
All that is moot now, except for the dogma it instilled in me to archive
a copy of original SP release - because I can *always* obtain a copy of
the latest version of the release.
That being said: one of the first things I noticed with regards to
installing SP2 was some minor, *very* *very* minor, inconsistancies and
incompatiblilties with my old installs of AVG free, v6 and ZoneAlarm Pro
(one of the older versions with which I had become quite fond.)
The new SP2 security sequence did NOT recognize AVG free v6, and some
glitch with recognizing updating the third-party firewall, but I simply
over-rode those dialogs by turning them off in the Control Panel >
Windows Firewall & Security.
It came to pass that I updated ZoneAlarm Pro to v5.5.062.004 (the latest)
and also updated AVG Free from v6 to v7.
These went without incident, however, I was having some problems (so
minor I barely recall the specifics) with mostly seemingly slow boot-ups
- so I decided to flash my WinXP-SP2 OS again by executing the SP2 file
"over the top" so to speak.
Lo and behold, not only did that go silky smooth, but also after that
Windows XP recognized AVG free v7 and my firewall configuration - and my
boot-ups were much faster and smoother and everything seemed to fine tune
for me with that.
So, the moral of the story is: have fun; keep smiling; tithe regularly;
and brush your teeth at least 3 times a day!
