Sony Digital Camera and Win XP don't get along

S

Soledad

I have the Sony DSC-S70 and a PC with Win XP proffesional.
Win XP is not recognizing properly my camera. Each time I
connect the camera via the usb cable, Windows tells me
that it doesn't recognize the USB device. Then I have to
uninstall all the USB drivers (the camera and the
scanner), re-install them a couple of times, and then
Windows recognize the camera. But if after a few days I
want to download other pictures, the circle stars again.
A year ago this didn't happen. Windows recognized the
camera on its own (cause the DSC-S70 is on the supported
camera drivers, pre-packed with the OS). So, I'm guessing
that one of the many Service Packs downloaded in the past
year messed up with something that is causing this
problem. I tested the camera in another PC with Win XP
prof. and it didn't recognize the camera either. And a
year and a half ago, I used that PC to download some
pictures, and at that time, Windows recognize the camera
all on its own. I have downloaded the latest drivers
available in the Sony support web page and it didn't make
the difference.
I had read all the posts in here and nothing address this
particular issue.
I also looked in the Sony support pages, and there was
nothing helpful.
Any new ideas?

I have no idea if this is the solution to your problem
but maybe you want to try it out. Go to "Control Panel" -
"Administration tools" -> "Services" in there find
the "WIA (Windows Image Acquisition)" service and set it
to "Automatic" and restart your PC. But as I said I dont
know if this has anything to do with your problem...

Run sfc /scannow from a command prompt, forcing the OS to check for
missing and damaged system files. Have the installation CD handy if the
folder i386 is not resident on the HD. Running sfc seems to take care
of some of these WIA and other weird errors in my experience.

Oh, XP likes to have only one TWAIN device operative at a time, so if
there is a scanner with a scanner app loaded at startup, this might
interfere with the camera's TWAIN, making it impossible to load the
camera driver.

I am having the same problem with my Sony DSC-S70 Camera and Windows XP. I can connect to the camera at work with Windows 2000 so I assume it is an XP problem. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Sony to no avail.

Tried the sfc/scannow but when I put in my Windows XP disk I got a message that it was the wrong disk. Any other suggestions?

Check to see if you have Real Player installed. If you do try uninstalling
it and change to Normal Mode USB instead of PTP.

I found several others post that had the same problem. I uninstalled Real
Player and Walla its back to normal.

Good luck
