Some questions on possible new SFF system.

I'm investigating the possibility of replacing my mid-tower with a
Shuttle SN95G5v3. I've heard it's pretty quiet, and I quite like the
looks. I've had Shuttles before, and like 'em.

Most of my stuff will xfer over to the new case, except, unfortunately,
my relatively new AMD 64 3000+, Socket 754 CPU.

The case takes a Socket 939. I blinked, and suddenly there's a lot more
choice than I thought. Winchester, Venice, Clawhammer, Sledgehammer...
what's the difference?

Also, how much faster a CPU would I need to see a noticible difference
from what I have now?

Aside from surfing and email, I do extensive large digital image
processing (I have a 8MB digital camera), and video editing from a
miniDV camcorder.

The equipment I have now, and will xfer:

WD 40GB Raptor SATA - will be OS drive
Seagate 200GB SATA - data
Sony DVD R/W, but will probably replace with plextor dual layer SATA
6-in-1 card reader.
PowerColor 9600 PRO AGP video (will it fit?)
memory" pair of Geil Golden Dragon, PC-3200 512GB

So, I welcome comments on what I'm thinking of doing. I'll miss my
LianLi case with the CrazyPC dragon, but later perhaps I'll build a new
one based on one of the newer black LianLi cases.. but for now, I
haven't been spending a lot of time inside my case, and I can certainly
use the extra space in this cluttered room.

Venice is the better of the cores. Better memory management, lower power
consumption, less heat, better overclocking potential. There isn't much
difference speed wise between cores at stock speeds, but the venice is
made on a smaller process than some of the other cores and was designed
with reduced power consumption in mind. The fastest chips (the FX) are
still on the older process & older cores though. In a small space like
the shuttle you are probably better off getting the venice core for heat
reasons.

I'm not familiar with version 3, but since the board is probably still
Nforce3 based you should be able to reuse your 9600 AGP card. I'm not
100% sure about this, but I don't think you are going to be able to fit
2 HD's, a DVD, and an internal 6 in 1 media reader. No problems if the
media reader is external, but the shuttle cubes usually only have 2 3.5
bays and 1 5.25 bay. Maybe version 3 is bigger in some way, or has more
bays, but if this isn't the case, you better look into getting an
external reader.

With what you are planning to use this system for, I would recommend against
the shuttle and get a case with better cooling. Video editing can heat
things up pretty fast in a case that has poor cooling. Why not stick with
your present case, and put it on the floor?

Venice uses a little more power according to this article.

I think it should be OK, but I'll check. The SS40 I have sitting here
has space for two HDs - one under the 3.5" bay (which has a floppy, I've
had this system for a while), and one above the PS, plus a 5.25" bay for
the CDROM.

No floor space, essentially. I'm currently living in England, rooms
here are pretty small by American standards. Needed a crowbar to fit
all the crap into this room I have in here :)

Good point about cooling though. This case does that well - it runs
normally at around 33c Mobo and 36c CPU, rarely goes over 40c even when
I'm doing video editing. A bit loud though. One of my other options is
to upgrade this old PC68 LianLi for PC60A Plus, which is nearly
identical, but better face and quieter.

The debate goes on. Problem is, I simply don't have the $$ for what I
really want to do: Update the LianLi, replace the SS40G with something
black and 64 bit, and upgrade my Fujitsu laptop for something faster.
Maybe I need a second job :)

Maybe you need to move to the US? LOL

soon enough. For now, there's NewEgg (I'm American, but posted overseas).
