Few questions regarding a new system..

Hey all

I am in process of building a new system for me, mainly for gaming currently
I play WoW, Halo, Titan quest etc.

I have a P4 2gig CPU with 2 gig RAM for 2 yrs now so its sorta aging thats
what I feel anyway.

I read on System components website, AMD new AM2 x2 core CPU what are they?

Should I go for Intel or AMD, bear in mind I don't play too graphically
intense games but I do still want something in between Mid to highend gaming
machine, mid is fine as long as it does 2 yrs fine for me then I can upgrade
again..

So, Dual core SMP processing benefits only to those applications that built
to use that technology, I don't see many new games uses such SMP x2
processor technology but will they in lets say 1 yr or so?

So what should I choose Higher cycle 1x cpu or 2x core slower cycle cpu.

Cheers

The performance leader is now Intel. If you are looking for the fastest
machine then you'll want to get a new Core2 Duo. However I'd wait a month
or two before buying one, I'm planning on getting one in September. If you
are looking for a mid range machine then an Athlon X2 is still a good
choice. AMD has just slashed their prices so that they could match Intel's
price/performance. The advantage of an X2 is that it's a mature core, the
new socket AM2 A64s are basically the same as the 939s with the exception
of a new DDR2 controller. The Nforce 500 chipsets are also just a tweak on
the the Nforce4's. The Core2 Duos are completely new, the 965 chipset is
also new. When something is brand new there are likely to be some bugs. I
doubt that the processor is harboring anything serious but you never know,
that's why I'd wait a couple of months before buying one. So if you are
looking to buy something today I'd get an X2, if you can wait a little bit
then get a Core2.

The AMD AM2 CPUs are almost the same as 939s, but now use DDR2 memory.
AMD AM2 & Intel CPUs use DDR2 on their motherboards.
AMD Socket 939 still uses DDR memory, so assuming your 2 year old memory is
DDR (hopefully PC3200).
You could use your current memory with an AMD X2 Socket 939 CPU.
I'm waiting on price on the AMD X2 4200+ socket 939 to come down a little
bit more (currently $199 at newegg).
If you have a 20 pin power supply (new ones are 24 pin), then check out the
Asrock motherboards,
some of them can work with AMD X2 CPUs and the older 20 pin power supplies.

If your planning to record TV and edit video in the future, and game, then
dual core is the way to go. AMD's AM2 dual-core and single core processors
and motherboards are cheap and is probably the way to go. Used with Nero's
Ultra Edition 7, my socket 939 3500+ can load and edit a movie in about 10
mins or less( your P4 and AMD's Barton XP processors take about 3 hours) .
So it seems safe to say that any AMD processor from 3500 up will do fine,
depending how much money you want to spend. The AM2 3800 Orleans looks good
at 2.4 ghz and $146 CDN for a single core if your just gaming. For
multi-tasking, the dual-core 4200 Windsor at $236 CDN looks like a decent
buy. What your going to have to decide is how much do you want to spend on
ram. You will not want to get anything running slower than 800mhz, and I
would say save you money and get the 1066mhz so your ram isn't taking away
performance. Since the 1066 stuff is new on the market, it is expensive. And
you will also want to get a video card in the ATI X1800/X1900 class or
Nvidia's 7800/7900 class.
