slow transfer rate

i am using laptop and desktop @ home
laptop has a 802.11g built-in adapter
desktop has a 802.11b usb wireless adapater
both connect to a wireless router ( 802.11b )
after i setup file sharing, i tried copied some files (227MB) from desktop to laptop ( i did it on laptop ), but it took about 20 min to 30 min to finish. on the task manager, both computer show a 11mbps connection, but they only used about 30% of that to transfer those files. Did i set anything wrong making the slow tranfer?

227 megs / 11 megs = 20.63 minutes *at best*

Honestly, the point of my last post is that 11 megs are in a very perfect
environment. Depending on what other items you have that run on that freq.
(2.4 MHz) you will be lucky to hit 1-3 megs.

but at this rate, i am litttle bit disappointed
i wished the w-lan can let me forget moving the ext. hdd around
but one thing i don't understand is 11mbps ~ 1 MBytes/s
then 227 MB FILES should be transferred about 227 second, shouldn't it?

Yeah, I was exaggerating a little. But the advertised speed of any wireless
connection should be considered unreachable in the real world. There are
just too many variables to consider.

this router is like my first computer HDD ( 486 era ) which promised delivering 33MB/s, but actually gave a 17 MB/s

Your expectations are a bit optimistic. 11 Mb/s is the peak bit rate,
not the STR (Sustained Transfer Rate). For file copies, a STR of
anything from 25-50% of the peak rate usually means the WiFi net is
working correctly.

On my home LAN, I get ~300KB/s from a 11 Mb/s wireless PC to a 100 Mb/s
wired PC through the WAP/router. With both PCs wirelessly connected via
a router, I'd expect even less.
