Shortcuts and exe files

Saine

Hey friends,

Help me please to solve this problem.
I am using Windows 2000 Professional. When ever I click on
any *.exe files or any program shortcut I am getting this
error "The file does not have program associated with it
for perform the action. Create an association in the
folder option in Control Panel."

I have many programs that I cannot use right now,
specially if program starts with *.exe extension. Example
I have installed on my computer MS Office, if I click on
the shortcut of the MS word it will not open, and I will
get the same error.
But if I will double click on any Excel or Word file which
one I created before then it will open with out any error.
So please help me to solve this issue.

Manny thanks and regards.

Hi Saine,

Yves point is that techniques and fixes vary by operating system. By posting
here, you may get erroneous information that can damage your system. Please
ask your question in the appropriate group to get the correct information.
Yves is not trying to be mean, or discourteous, he is trying to protect you
from causing further damage to your system.

Incidentally, the problem on your system is that the .lnk and .exe file
associations are damaged. As I do not know if my fixes for a WinXP system
are suitable for a Win2000 system, I would not and will not recommend them.
I would not want to be the person to blame for further damaging your system.
But I would think that it is a safe bet that you will get the proper
response in a Win2000 group where those that deal with this operating system
all the time hang out.

Saine,

I second the advice & opinion of Nutcase here. Proves risky when it comes to registry editing especially.

For .EXE files:
JSI Tip 6615. Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts don't run on Windows 2000 / Windows XP?:
http://www.jsiinc.com/subn/tip6600/rh6615.htm
[** Follow the "Windows 2000" part alone**. This fixes the .exe association.]

For .LNK (shortcuts) files:
JSI Tip 3540. Has your Windows 2000 Start menu, Desktop, and Explorer shortcuts stopped working?:
http://www.jsiinc.com/subh/tip3500/rh3540.htm

If this does not help, post it Win2000 groups for faster and even more accurate replies.

In XP - and I think it will be the same in 2000 - Make the following,
after - - start and before - - end into a file by cut/paste to NotePad.
Make sure there is a blank line at the end. Save as "Patch.reg" then
right-click on this file and take Merge to enter it into the registry.
But have a registry backup available in case

- - start
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk]
@="lnkfile"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
@="Shortcut"
"EditFlags"=hex:01,00,00,00
"IsShortcut"=""
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\CLSID]
@="{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

- - end
