Problems with shortcuts etc....

I am running a Windows XP based desktop. Several months ago I gave my
computer to my cousin who did something to it and can't remember, well now
all my shortcuts have the same file extension (lnk) and if I need to axcess a
certain folder or program I have to right click on the shortcut, open with,
and if the "open with" program isn't listed then it will open a window that
contains all my programs, and must "open with" from there....that is if the
program is asissible. I tried assigning the appropriate file extensions to
everything in the folder options, but had no luck there.
Another problem I have is I cannot install ANYTHING new, I can download, but
when it comes to installing, it does absolutely nothing, if I insert an
installation disk, same thing, will not install.
My last problem.....I do not have access to any folders in my system that
allows me to, not only make changes, but to at least view them, for example:
I open up "Control Panel" and click on "Add Hardware", nothing opens, click
on "Internet Options", nothing opens, something as simple as "Date and Time",
even that I cannot open.
Understand any of my problems?
Please help if at all possible.

Try the .lnk file fix here:

A couple of considerations:

- Fix the default associations for .cpl files.

- You may be infected. Download, install, update and scan with these:

I do thank you for the response, unfortunately none of your suggestions
helped me. You see I can't even run anything in the command prompt. I
downloaded the ZIP files, extracted and when I clicked on the REG file a
window opened up and asked me "What Program I wanted to use to open the file"
or "search the internet for for the appropriate program", and all of that
just takes me right back to not being able to install anything.
Any other suggestions?
Thank you!

When you right-click the unzipped files, you should have a "Merge"
option. If not, right-click, click Edit, or just open with Notepad or
Wordpad. See what changes are made, open REGEDIT and make the suggested
changes.

If you're unable to do these things, try running the two malware
programs in Safe Mode where they may be able to get control. I don't
think removing malware will fix the associations though..
