When I run some EXE files, XP launches the MS installer

When I run an application's EXE file then XP launches the MS installer.

These EXE's are *not* installation files and these EXEs have been used
as applications many times before.

I launch the EXE by double clicking on with (a) a shortcut link or (b)
on the EXE file itself.

At a guess, it is as if the file association for EXE is somehow mixed up
launching the MS Installer.

How can I fix this?

It's not very likely that this applies to *all* executable files. If this
applies to MS Office applications only, there are many reasons and there-
fore, you may want to post your problem to an Office group.

This may happen when deleting files being installed with that particular
application or when removing shortcuts from the start menu. Just let the
Windows Installer finish its work in order to replace those file/s.

That's very unlikely since you're talking about *some* .exe files only
according to the subject line.

Use this utility as a last resort only and be careful what you're doing.

Nope! That's neither an option nor a solution since this does not
eliminate the problem's origin.
