We both know that this is not true - you ***can*** run FireFox!
Let's be a little more specific: What exactly happens when you do
this:
1. Click Start / run / c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe {OK}
2. Click My Computer, navigate to c:\Windows\system32, then
double-click cmd.exe.

Please try ***both*** tests and don't just say "it does not work".
Say exactly what happens!

·im using firefox as we speak i swear to all gods in existinse(how
ever you spell that). now as for the cmd which i already tried... this
is wat happens (EXACTLY)
·in start>run>c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe... a window pops up and
says:
windows cannot open this file. to open this file, windows needs to know
what program created it. underneath all the words i have 2 options to
use the web service to find the appropriate program. or. select the
program from the list.
· as for clicking directly on the cmd.exe file. no luck when i
clicked on it the icon went transparent and nothin happens or loads..
its just there. when i right click it, there are no options to open it
just to scan it, compress it, delete, copy, remame, send, and copy
to... or move to...
·(even if i rename it to CMD.exe same effect happens, witch is
nothing). (and like i stated b4 the file type is EXE. but i thought
that .exe file were application file types?is it?)

It seems that you painted yourself into a corner while playing
around with your folder settings. Congratulations! It's hard to
say which setting you damaged but I suspect it's the %pathext%
variable. Here are a few options to fix the problem:
- Copy cmd.exe to cmd.com, then double-click cmd.com. If
this is successful then you can try the same trick with regedit.exe.
If this works too then launch regedit.com and navigate to
HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment
Now make sure that the pathext value includes ".exe" in its
data field, then reboot the machine.
- Start looking for your WinXP CD, then perform a repair installation.
- Ask a friend to give you a copy of his WinXP CD, then do the
repair installation. His CD must be the same type as yours, e.g.
an OEM CD. If it is different then your product key won't work.
- Temporarily install your hard disk as a slave disk in some other
WinXP PC, then edit the System registry file located in
E:\windows\system32\config. Now make the same modification
as explained above.

See my other reply. And please - try to be more careful in what
you do. It is not in the least helpful if I recommend one thing and
you do something completely different.

If you still have your product key then you can ask Microsoft for
a replacement CD.

If you have lost your product key too then you're in for an expensive
lesson. You will have to buy a new copy and read the big print on
the back of the package that says "Don't lose this product key".

dammit now im getting sad ='(( the only way i find the product key is
on the back of the xp instalation disk? can u answer the replies i left
above. wats the price of those disks?

HTML removed. Repost.
An "OEM" disk is the "Original Equipment Manufacture" disk that came
with a pre-installed copy of Windows XP. It is mainly used as a recovery
disk in case you have to reload windows. If you have a OEM copy of
windows installed on your system, your product key in affixed to your
computer somewhere. It sounds as if you installed a retail copy of
windows xp on your system. You cannot use your friend cd to install
windows on your pc because this violates the EULA. OEM product keys are
assigned to the pre-installed computer only and cannot be moved. Retail
copies of windows have a 1:1 ratio. Meaning, one key to one computer. It
can be moved to another computer as long as it is used only on one pc.
Now, what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

In view of the misinformation you posted, we need to start again.
You previously wrote that you CAN run cmd.exe. Now you do
this:
1. Run cmd.exe. This will give you a Command Prompt.
2. Type this command:
set pathext{Enter}
Paste the response into your reply.

cannot said:

i typed set pathext, a reply came up it said pathext:.com;.exe;.and all
those other file extensions.... wen i typed that exactly as is was the
result was this command..'PATHEXT' was not recognized by internal or

type the reply with set in front of it or did i do it right and
something is wrong with the cmd

This is just getting comical. Start over. What is the problem, you are
jumping around about OEM disk, reloading from a friends disk, cmd.exe
issues. What is the problem and what do you want to accomplish?

I repeat my previous instructions:
2. Type this command:
set pathext{Enter}
Paste the response into your reply.

"Paste" means that you copy what you see on the screen
into your next reply. Verbatim, please!

While you're in the Command Prompt, you might as well
run some other tests. Type these commands ***verbatim***:

attrib.exe{Enter}
c:\windows\system32\eventvwr.exe{Enter}
notepad {Enter}
path {Enter}

The "attrib" command is supposed to show you some file
attributes. Does it work? If it does not, what do you see?

The "eventvwr" command should launch your event recorder.
Does it work? If it does not, what do you see?

The "notepad" command should launch your notepad. I don't
want an "exe" extension on this one. Does it work? If it does
not, what do you see?

The "path" command should display your current path. Paste
it into your reply.

Please be patient. This appears to be a young person
with a somewhat casual approach to trouble-shooting.
With a little bit of perseverance we might get there
without having to reload to OS.
