severe problems with critical updade kb831167

my problem is automatic update brought up a critical update for internet
explorer 6 service pack 1 (q831167).it installed but automatic update keeps
bringing it back up.when i tried to install kb 831167 from the microsoft
update pages it would'nt let me install it,it said i had to first install
internet explorer 6 service pack 1.also q831167 isnt in add and remove
programs in control panel.can anyone give any advice or a link to the
explorer 6 sevice pack one i seem to need.

you will find this sort of thing is quite a common occurrence.

Given the age of this update (2004) I would say it is a similar bug to the
one several people have just experienced with 832894. It has probably been
replaced by a later update & there is a bug in the updating software which
has not recognised this earlier update as being replaced.

I bet you already have IE 6 SP1 installed too, though it is also asking you
to install this.

Choose the option to custom install, then deselect this update, and choose
"don't show me this update again". That will stop further attempts to install
it. You also sometimes find that after a day or two it will stop trying to
install, once MS become aware of the bug and fix it.
