Setup problem on Thinkpad 570E: cannot load ntkrnlmp, error code 4

I get this message:
file\$win_nt$."bt\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded
the error code is 4
set up cannot continue. press any key to exit.

This is on an IBM Thinkpad 570E, that originally had W2k Professional on it, bought from company with Win98, now trying to upgrade to Win2k.

Can anybody help?

Did you format the drive prior to or during the Windows 2000 installation?
Are you booting from the CD, from a boot diskette, or are you running the
installation from inside of Windows 98?

Tried to upgrade from within Windows 98. This is happening after the first re-boot, when it starts accessing the CD.

Tried ot boot from CD, but get message "cannot find setupp.dll" or something like that (may not remember the name correctly).
