Cannot load win2k

Kubla

New computer with ASUS A7V8X-X MB and AMD 2600+. I am trying to do a clean
install of Win2K on new Hard Drive and the installation stops and tell me:
"File\i386\ntkrnLmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 4
Setup cannot continue."

No matter what I do I cannot get past this point. I even formatted the hard
drive but I cannot get Win2K loaded.

Am I doing something wrong, or maybe my Win2K disc is defected? Can someone
help me?

Thank you

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Thanks, Dave. My drive controller is IDE but I didn't really look at it
prior to the installation attempt. I know (or think I know) Win2K defaults
to ATA66 so I'll check that out.

Let me add this.
I removed all the pci cards except for the Video card and it's on the HCL.
Same thing - unable to get past the error msg.
I then tried to install Win 98SE and got a error message that the WRONG TRUE
TYPE FONT HAS CAUSED WINDOWS TO STOP INSTALLING.
Just wondered if this might sound like a bad motherboard?
Also I was unable to F6 the installation. I would press F6 as soon as the
installation starts but there was no response until the error message comes
up.

Seems the install may also be mis-interpreting your mb as a dual processor.
This article may help.

Well, Dave, you were right in that it turned out to be hardware-the video
card was the culprit. I was using the ATI RADEON 7000 and it was
conflicting with the Via chipset on the mother board. I tried three more
ATI cards and they didn't work but when I changed to a nVidia Gforce card I
was up and running.
Thanks for the help. You put me on the right path. I have another ASUS
board (A7N8X DLX) and I had problems with the memory not working. I had
Kingston memory with the chips made in China and when I changed to Kingston
with chips made in Malaysia, everything worked.
Thank you every so much again.
