i have a w2k advanced server, system and boot files,
sitting on a raid-5 configuration. this worked fine for
2.5 yrs. now i have to upgrade this server to windows
2003 server and i'm getting the following error: "file
\@win_nt$.~bt\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. the error
code is 1". am i getting the error because the system and
boot files are sitting on a raid-5 config? if yes, can i
move the system and boot files to another drive, leaving
the raid-5 alone(it has data on it)? thanks.

You cannot upgrade advance server to windows 2003 you should re-install and
restore any data

You should have upgraded to windows 2003 enterprise edition that is the only
upgrade path supported I believe

I have seen a reference to this for win2k pro before but not on 2k3
(ntkrnlmp.exe = NT Kernel MultiProcessor?)

In that instance the cpu frequency was changed here is the thread

http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/31272.html

here is one for XP

This issue may occur if your computer's BIOS has issues when ACPI is
enabled.

Did you run the upgrade advisor first before you upgraded to see if you
require any hardware or firmware upgrades for the machine first.
what is the hardware platform ?

did you run the upgrade in windows or from the boot from cd option.
perhaps if your let us know how you went about the upgrade we can help
further
check out the links and review your bios settings

i booted the system from w2k, inserted the w2k+3
enterprise cd, and did the upgrade. the system then seemed
ok until a re-boot. w2k+3 asked for the "adprep forestprep
and adprep /domainprep" to be run and i did that. what
is "ACPI"? the hardware platform is a dell 6300 with raid-
5. how do i run the "hardware advisor? it never asked me
to do that?

what version of bios and perc is the is the server running

the upgrade advisor is ran by using the /checkupgradeonly switch winnt
/checkupgradeonly or winnt32 /checkupgradeonly

Dell forums have some others that have had problems with limitations on the
perc 2 controllers as the 6300 is an old server.
There are quotes that install problems occur.

ACPI Information
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface

http://www.acpi.info/

I would start here and look at your bios levels and controller levels
Did you check the Hardware Compatibility List at all ?
