Services.exe error messages was back

S

Steve Miller

Hello ng,

I had got a services.exe error message shortly after the computer booted. Actually, clicking on
the message window will result in the computer shutdown.

I have hade the issue a while before already. Back then I solved it with a renewed activation of
Windows booted into 'Save Mode'.

Yesterday, booted into save mode, I wasn't aware of the manual activation method, and forgot
to try therefore. A few attempts later it almost would have let me back on the hadd.

As I put in the Windows CD everything worked fine again. Until today morning.

When I try to activate Windows in normal mode, a white window will pop up and the hour glass
turning over forever.

Do you have some advice. The Windows XP copy was genuine.

Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click on the Validate
Windows and/or Validate Office button then restart your computer.

If you weren't able to Validate, proceed as follows:

1. Download this diagnostic tool, saving it to your desktop:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

=> WinXP: Double-click on the executable to run the tool.

=> Vista & Win7: Right-click on the executable and select Run as
Administrator to run the tool.

2. After running the tool, click on the Windows and/or Office tab as
appropriate and then click on Copy to Clipboard.

NB: You may want to open a new Notepad file, paste the contents of your
clipboard into it & save for future reference.

3. Begin a new post in the appropriate Microsoft Genine Advantage forum and
paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/genuine

4. A troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

Hello, sorry I feel a bit sick at the moment and didn't do much the last few days,
therefore.

No. Unfortunately the message came back shortly after booting the computer.

Yes the options are ticked/selected.

I loaded and ran the evaluation tool as well. Still the same.

I will try to boot into save mode to see what will happen.

Hello, PA Bear, where was the name borrowed from, by the way? Are you a bear
who lives in a bands PA, in order to make it buzz a lot?

However, booting in Save Mode brought not up any other information as was the
case last time.

As well, normal Windows mode didn't.

Might be the activation request was not shown in Save Mode last time, but in
normal Mode after the computer was booted to Save Mode once. I don't recall
now exactly, unfortunately.

But, the Windows Activation doesn't work properly in normal mode. It should
say something just like 'Windows already was activated!' or something, right?

Instead, I got an other error message saying 'You decided to abort the program
msoobe.exe, which doesn't respond, to end.' I think it's somehow unfair, since I
am using genuine Windows software.

But the good news was the fact that a somehow spoiled Windows activation was
the cause for services.exe to be terminated. Short for, Windows thinks it was not
genuine and shuts down.

The was being in compliance with the Windows Update website was not longer
working for my computer.

Could I somehow trigger the Activation notification to pop up? By renaming a
file or program or folder or something?

I'm asking since I already was trying to install a hotfix, which but was 'older'
then the actual software and thusly didn't install at all.

You post from a German IP (213.211.244.92). Was the computer-in-question
purchased outside of Germany and/or the EU (e.g., USA)?

Steve Miller

Hello, thank you for the reply,

What a cool name. I hope I won't forget the meaning.

No the computer was bought in Germany and upgraded by me in summer
this year and running with no problems except standby and hibernate, which
was caused by a spoiled manufacturers Bios.

But it ran for month without problems. If I wouldn't know better, I would
suggest the network driver is causing it somehow.

I set up a new user account today, that the activation was working for, not so
the Windows Updates website. I was told, Windows already was activated.

Steve

PS. I only got to switch on the computer by today again.

Upgraded to what?

How did you resolve the Bios problem?

In your first post, you said, "Yesterday... put in the Windows CD
everything worked fine again." Why did you (have to) insert the CD?

Speaking of your first post, what exactly was this "services.exe error
message"?

cf. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/services.exe.htm

If the "services.exe" file in question was not located in...

%windows%\System32 <=this folder

....you've got a(nother) hijackware infection on your hands.

S

Steve Miller

Hello, I upgraded a Jetway mainboard and AMD quad core processor. As well, 4 gigs
of RAM.

The Bios still was the same as before.

We I put the Windows CD in drive the error message didn't show up, only since the
CD was ín drive. I thought, by then, I couldn't be able to boot no more and put the CD
in to, probably, boot from CD. I was about to try a repair installation in case anything
else would fail to work.

Yesterday, I added a new user to see if the Activation notification would pop up. What
I didn't think of was, Windows would not let me go back to the Administrator account,
since, there was being a user account now.

I got it all set up again for the new user, so that the error message did not show up now.
Therefore I don't have the actual text of the message ready to hand.

The Windows Update website but still doesn't work for me.

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
