Service Pack

I wanted to get more information about service packs. We
are running windows 2000 and when we apply the Service
pack 4 it locks the computer up (all 10 of them). Can I
just install hotfixes, or something and forget about the
SP? What is the point of the SP anyway? Is it needed or
only if you want to do a lot of updates at one time? Any
articles about other upgrade methods besides SP? Do i
understand the real point of the SP or no? We just need
the Critical updates, nothing else! Having virus problems.

Sounds like you need to figure out what is causing the lockups because that
is not normal. Are you going from SP1 right to SP4 or have you been keeping
up with SPs all along? Have you tried rebuilding your image? That might
rule out a hardware issue. If you build a new image from scratch and your
10 computers still lockup on SP4, then maybe you have a driver issue. If
you could describe in more detail the "locks" and when it occurs, what
other third party stuff you might have going on, etc, someone here might be
able to help. Have you checked your event logs for errors? You mentioned
virus problems, what makes you think SP4 is going to resolve them for you?
Have you cleaned the machines with AV software and/or any worm removal tools
necessary depending on what viruses we are talking about here? If your
computer has been infected by a specific threat, can you tell us what it is
because there are usually specific critical patches required to protect
against various threats. If you are going to stay with 2000, SP5 will be
coming out soon enough so you might as well fix your problems now or maybe
upgrade to XP?

If you have virus problems, *always* sort them out before installing a
service pack.
