Service Pack Install aborted - no catalog files message

Installing SP3 from SP1. Install 99% complete when aborted by "catalog not
found." Knowledgebase says something like windows authenticity can't be
verified. This is an OEM authorized version of windows so everything should
be legit. Can anyone help me work around this?

In order to install SP3, you need either SP1a or SP2 installed.
