Seperating LAN and systems??

There's a problem with the two-router setup: computers on Router B
will be able to access computers on Router A, because Router B's WAN
(Internet) interface is in the same subnet as Router A's LAN
interface. It might not be a big problem, because there will be quite
a bit of "security by obscurity".

Let's say that CompA is connected to Router A, and CompB is connected
to Router B. A user on CompB won't see CompA in My Network Places.
But that user will be able to access CompA by using its IP address.
For example, if CompA has IP address 192.168.0.10, this command in the
Start | Run box on CompB will access CompA and show its shared disks
and folders:

\\192.168.0.10

The easy way to completely isolate two networks, while sharing a
common Internet connection, is with three routers.

A question, if I may, Al: Why not buy a switch? They're as cheap as
hubs, and they give better network throughput.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!!! :)
The price of an extra router is not a big deal.

I followed Chucks advise and looked around on the forum. Toooo much stuff
for this rooky. Went to Office Max and Best Buy to see what kind and types
of routers are out there. Toooo many different types of routers but it would
seem that the suggestion he offered would be pretty simple. Help Chuck!!!

What would be the +'s and/or -'s of usings a switch vs 3 routers(as in
Chucks suggestion)?

Still trying to learn.

L.

Lem,

A switch will leave you and Brian on the same LAN, just as you are right now.
You need another router (or an additional TWO for a balanced layout) to separate
your LANs, and to give each of you a reliable and secure network, and Internet
access.

See my notes about your project, in my previous reply.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info and have copied your "balanced" system.
We have two routers already so I need to make a decision on what I want to
get.
I looked around the forum you suggested, man is that an indepth forum!!
Still not sure what type of router I may need. Something simple but I do
need the wireless for my one system plus my laptop.

Lewis,

I personally have had good luck with Linksys. If you want a simple reliable
wired router for business use, ie with some future possibilities, I suggest the
Linksys BEFSX41. If you want to shave $$$ the Linksys BEFSR41 is $30 cheaper.
You can spend way more money for a true small office router, but the SX41 is a
good place to start. A wireless unit, comparable to the SX41, would be the
Linksys WRT54G.

Chuck,
Good morning. Hope you had a good week-end.

Comment and question- Brians IT friend worked on his system this week-end,,
while we we're painting.
He rearranged the wiring and hooked system to different routers. Not sure
exactly what he did but everything, including the wireless, is up and
running ok.

Question- I use Zone Alarm and two of my system are now showing an
additional connection(lookback adapter).
IOW-the only computer/network that been in the Firewall zone on all three of
my systems was/is:
Name: New Network
IP Address/site: (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0)
Entry Type: Network
Zone: Trusted

NOW, in addition to original "New Network" this is showing up on two
systems.
Name: Loopback adapter
IP Address/Site: 127.0.0.1
Entry Type: Ip Address
Zone: Trusted

Plus I have a new icon in my bottom right system tray on the 98se wireless;
two small tv screen that read, "Internet Gateway: connected".

Should I be concerned until I get my own router up and running OR is this
"normal" because of the new setup?

L.

Lewis,

Every computer has a loopback adapter, it's a feature of IP routing. I think
what you're seeing are UPnP discoverable devices. This is normal because most
modern hardware is UPnP capable.

A few security experts will have you shut UPnP off. I'm not one that agrees
with that; I think that a properly secured and monitored computer can run UPnP,
and have the Internet Gateway device available, in safety. UPnP makes it easier
for many convenience and communications programs to work properly.

Just keep your own computers clean and safe, and you'll be fine.

On second thought, this may have started because I upgraded(on the 2
systems) ZA which includes some "new" functions, including a spybot program.
Still have one to go and will see if it shows up after I upgrade this last

I always shut off UPnP. and I'd definitely turn it off in a

I hooked up a seperate router but having problems. The interent connection
slowed WAY down.
Put it back like it was and haven't had a chance to work on it. Not sure
what we're/I'm doing wrong?
All I did was disconnect my two wire connections (one is wireless) and
hooked into "my" router. My systems can see each other and I can swap files,
etc. but the net connection is SLOW...
I was going to ask for assistance first of next week, if it slows down and
try some different settings, etc..

Anything I might try or read up on?

Thanks for the info and have copied your "balanced" system.
We have two routers already so I need to make a decision on
what
I
want
to
get.
I looked around the forum you suggested, man is that an
indepth
forum!!
Still not sure what type of router I may need. Something
simple
but
I
do
need the wireless for my one system plus my laptop.
Lewis

Lewis,

I personally have had good luck with Linksys. If you want a
simple
reliable
wired router for business use, ie with some future
possibilities,
I
suggest the
Linksys BEFSX41. If you want to shave $$$ the Linksys BEFSR41
is
$30
cheaper.
You can spend way more money for a true small office router,
but
the
SX41
is a
good place to start. A wireless unit, comparable to the SX41,
would
be
the
Linksys WRT54G.

Chuck,

Pretty sure the WRT54G wil do what I need.
Will pick it up today, Saturday, and will start reading later
today.
Will
have to wait until first of week to install.
Wife decided to paint a couple of offices this week-end!!

Later,

L.

L,

Good idea. Paint and electronics are not things that are good
to
mix.

Be sure to start with a secure WiFi LAN!

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from
experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

I've "played" with these systems enough that the wife said,
"we're
painting today", SO we're painting. :)

Have a great week-end,

Lewis

Chuck,
Good morning. Hope you had a good week-end.

Comment and question- Brians IT friend worked on his system this
week-end,,
while we we're painting.
He rearranged the wiring and hooked system to different routers.
Not
sure
exactly what he did but everything, including the wireless, is up
and
running ok.

Question- I use Zone Alarm and two of my system are now showing an
additional connection(lookback adapter).
IOW-the only computer/network that been in the Firewall zone on all
three
of
my systems was/is:
Name: New Network
IP Address/site: (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0)
Entry Type: Network
Zone: Trusted

NOW, in addition to original "New Network" this is showing up on
two
systems.
Name: Loopback adapter
IP Address/Site: 127.0.0.1
Entry Type: Ip Address
Zone: Trusted

Plus I have a new icon in my bottom right system tray on the 98se
wireless;
two small tv screen that read, "Internet Gateway: connected".

Should I be concerned until I get my own router up and running OR
is
this
"normal" because of the new setup?

L.

Lewis,

Every computer has a loopback adapter, it's a feature of IP routing.
I
think
what you're seeing are UPnP discoverable devices. This is normal
because
most
modern hardware is UPnP capable.

A few security experts will have you shut UPnP off. I'm not one
that
agrees
with that; I think that a properly secured and monitored computer
can
run
UPnP,
and have the Internet Gateway device available, in safety. UPnP
makes
it
easier
for many convenience and communications programs to work properly.

Just keep your own computers clean and safe, and you'll be fine.

Just now discovered another problem with my 98se wireless system. I
can't
get my e-mail, OE, to work.
Keep getting the "standard" error msg.

L.

Got it. Had to refigure NAV and Zone Alarm.

Lewis,

Is that NAV and ZA on the same computer? Is it JUST NAV? Or is NAV
part
of NIS
/ NPF?

NAV 2005 as a lone program and ZA.
They are both on all 3 systems and seems to be working OK.
Turned off WINXP firewall and letting ZA do it's thing.
Everything "seems" to be working OK.

L.

That's great news! And BTW, how are you and Brian doing on your network?

Thanks for asking. We're still running as before.

L.

Lewis,

That one has me puzzled. How much slower is slow? What is your advertised
download speed? Did you try another cable connecting the two routers?

I'm talking about as slow as an ol' 14.4 modem.
Most pages on IE won't even open.
Not sure what speed is as I "normally" use cnet.com to test speed and I
can't even connect to their site.

Now that's SLOWWWW. :)
