network with 98se's.

New to networking so here is a "detailed" description of setup.

5 xp home ed., 1x acting as server and 2x 98se.
1x cable modem, 1x Linksys 5 port router and 1x Belkin wired/wireless
router. Workgroup=Mshome.

This was originally set up with 4 xp's in office#1 working fine, 3(including
server) hooked into the Linksys and 1 into the Belkin.
The Belkin is hooked into the Linksys. Not sure if this is the "best" setup
but it's working for them so I can't change anything.

Office#2 (1xp and the 2x98se) were just added. Ran Netsetup.exe on both 98
systems.

Office#2 only,
the xp(wabash1) see's the 3 systems from office#1(alt1, alt2, alt3), server
and one 98se(wabash3). The 98se(wabash3) see everything also.
Wabash1(xp) and 3(98se) are connected to the Linksys router.
The other 98se(wabash2) is in a back office so installed a Netgear wireless
PCI adapter, left in the Aopen ethernet card??, and it's connecting to the
Belkin router which, again, is connected to the Linksys router.
All systems have internet access, no problem.
All system have NAV 2005 and Zone Alarm. Uninstalled ZA, set up
network/system and then reinstalled.
I tried to use the same setting from wabash3 to wabash2 but not connecting.
tpc/ip setting, master brower is disabled, etc.etc.

Additional findings,

We tried a laptop(xp wireless) through the Belkin and it works fine.
When I open Network Neig. on wabash3, I can see everything except wabash2.
BUT when I click on Wabash1 get the following error msg.
"//wabash1 is not accessible.
The computer or sharename could not be found. make sure you typed it
correctly, and try again."
Also, on wabash2 (98 not connecting), when I open NN all that shows up is
the Entire Network icon. on the other 98 (#3) it has text down the left
side.
Not sure if this is helpful or not.

Any suggestions please,

Any time you combine Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) and Windows NT (NT, 2000, XP, 2003)
on a LAN, you have to expect problems with Network Neighborhood. The browser
(subsystem that populates the NN display) on Windows 9x and Windows NT don't
work the same, and will conflict. The conflicts, as your observation shows,
aren't always consistent.

Thanks for getting back sooo soon. I turned off the "Master Browser" in both

The only problem I'm having with wabash3 (98se that does connect) is when I
go into NN and click on wabash1 (my xp machine) I get the following error
msg.

"//wabash1 is not accessible.
The computer or sharename could not be found. make sure you typed it

Also noticed when I click on one of the other machine, office01, I get the
following screen msg;

Enter network password
you must supply a password to make this connect.
Resourse: \\office01\ipc$
password:
(Not worried about getting into other systems, office1,2,3,server. Trying to

I can get into/open other computers(office02,03 and server) with no problem.

OK, the IPC$ error when trying to connect to office01, is authentication. You
need to enable the Guest account on all XP computers that you want to access.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate>

If you're sure that you disabled the browser on both Windows 98 computers, then
run "browstat status" on all Windows XP computers, and make sure that they all
report the same master browser. Multiple master browsers will cause this
problem.

You say all systems have NAV 2005. Is that NAV the standalone product, or did
you install Norton Internet Security?

1.
Since the "other" system(Ofallon1,2,3) and server belong to a business
partner AND his system was and is running OK, I may have a problem "messing"
with it. ;-) He has an insurance office, mine in real-estate and he needs
his system up and running 24/7 so he may have problems with me going over
and trying to make any changes to his system.
I don't care if I can get into the system(ofallon1) that's gives me the IPC$
error/msg. In fact, I'd just as soon stay out of it unless it may be causing
problems with my systems hooking up.
As far as getting into my xp system (see problem with wabash3(98se)
connecting to wabash1(xp)), can/should I enable guest account on it so the
98se can get into the files? It's a different msg. so not sure if this is
the problem.

2.
I recheck "File and print sharing MS network" and Browse Master is Disabled
on both 98se's.
Should I disable BM on my xp? If so, how. As stated before, I can see
wabash1 from wabash3, I just can't into it.
Just checked my xp, CP, Admin, Services, computer browser and it is set to
"AUTOMATIC".

3.
I had Norton System Works on the 2 98se but after reading several newgroups
I uninstalled, cleaned, etc. and then reloaded JUST NAV 2005 as a stand
alone. I also have Zone Alarm on all 3 systems but I'm guessing that's not
the problem as I can get into the 98se(wabash3) from the xp system, I can
see the xp(wabash1) from wabash3 but can't get into. Wabash2, next
situation, can't see anything nor can anything see it.

If you have multiple computers, and you want the Network Neighborhood display to
be reliable, you have to tune the browser setup on the LAN. Having too many
browsers will cause problems. Run browstat on Windows XP, and make sure you
don't have a conflict. The Wabash3 to Wabash1 error is symptomatic of this
problem.

If you have Norton SystemWorks, or Norton AntiVirus, then you don't have an
overlooked firewall. If you do have Zone Alarm, then you do need to choose

Thanks for the feedback. Learning about computers comes from working on them
(and fixing what you break).

Windows Firewall is disabled from the Control Panel - Security Center applet.
Zone Alarm is un installed using the instructions provided by Don Hoover, if you
can't configure it properly. Some folks turn off the WF service, which is the
wrong approach, which is why I put that note in there.

Unzip it to "C:\Browstat". Run it as:

# "C:\Browstat\Browstat status"

Browstat will not mess anything up. It's a diagnostic, like IPConfig.

Run it from all of your Windows XP systems please.

The browser uses anonymous authentication, so running browstat will not affect
Guest activation, nor vice versa. Do the two, separately, at your convenience.

If the other computers, that aren't yours, are on your LAN, that could be part
of the problem. Please read my article (yes, it's long, but the subject is
complex):

This was originally set up with 4 xp's in office#1 working
fine,
3(including
server) hooked into the Linksys and 1 into the Belkin.
The Belkin is hooked into the Linksys. Not sure if this is
the
"best"
setup
but it's working for them so I can't change anything.

Office#2 (1xp and the 2x98se) were just added. Ran

systems.

Office#2 only,
the xp(wabash1) see's the 3 systems from office#1(alt1, alt2,
alt3),
server
and one 98se(wabash3). The 98se(wabash3) see everything also.
Wabash1(xp) and 3(98se) are connected to the Linksys router.
The other 98se(wabash2) is in a back office so installed a
Netgear
wireless
PCI adapter, left in the Aopen ethernet card??, and it's
connecting
to
the
Belkin router which, again, is connected to the Linksys
router.
All systems have internet access, no problem.
All system have NAV 2005 and Zone Alarm. Uninstalled ZA, set
up
network/system and then reinstalled.
I tried to use the same setting from wabash3 to wabash2 but
not
connecting.
tpc/ip setting, master brower is disabled, etc.etc.

Additional findings,

We tried a laptop(xp wireless) through the Belkin and it
works
fine.
When I open Network Neig. on wabash3, I can see everything
except
wabash2.
BUT when I click on Wabash1 get the following error msg.
"//wabash1 is not accessible.
The computer or sharename could not be found. make sure you
typed
it
correctly, and try again."
Also, on wabash2 (98 not connecting), when I open NN all that
shows
up
is
the Entire Network icon. on the other 98 (#3) it has text
down
the
left
side.
Not sure if this is helpful or not.

98 machine but will check other setup, How do I disable master
browsing
in
Windows? or Win98 Trouble Shooting. when I get back to work
tomorrow
and
report findings to see if I can get the 98se system up and
running
on
the
network.

Disabling the browser on Windows NT:

Checking for browser conflict from Windows NT:

Make sure you don't have a misconfigured or forgotten firewall:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

Checked everything "suggested" and still not sure what to do.
Since I have one 98se system connecting to all systems, except
the
other98se, I thought it might be best to work on one
problem/system
at
a
time.

The only problem I'm having with wabash3 (98se that does connect)
is
when
I
go into NN and click on wabash1 (my xp machine) I get the
following
error
msg.

"//wabash1 is not accessible.
The computer or sharename could not be found. make sure you typed
it
correctly, and try again."

Also noticed when I click on one of the other machine, office01,
I
get
the
following screen msg;

Enter network password
you must supply a password to make this connect.
Resourse: \\office01\ipc$
password:
(Not worried about getting into other systems,
office1,2,3,server.
Trying
to
connect my systems wabash1,2,3.)

I can get into/open other computers(office02,03 and server) with
no
problem.

L.

OK, the IPC$ error when trying to connect to office01, is
authentication.
You
need to enable the Guest account on all XP computers that you
want
to
access.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate>

If you're sure that you disabled the browser on both Windows 98
computers,
then
run "browstat status" on all Windows XP computers, and make sure
that
they
all
report the same master browser. Multiple master browsers will
cause
this
problem.

You say all systems have NAV 2005. Is that NAV the standalone
product,
or
did
you install Norton Internet Security?

1.
Since the "other" system(Ofallon1,2,3) and server belong to a
business
partner AND his system was and is running OK, I may have a problem
"messing"
with it. ;-) He has an insurance office, mine in real-estate and
he
needs
his system up and running 24/7 so he may have problems with me
going
over
and trying to make any changes to his system.
I don't care if I can get into the system(ofallon1) that's gives me
the
IPC$
error/msg. In fact, I'd just as soon stay out of it unless it may
be
causing
problems with my systems hooking up.
As far as getting into my xp system (see problem with wabash3(98se)
connecting to wabash1(xp)), can/should I enable guest account on it
so
the
98se can get into the files? It's a different msg. so not sure if
this
is
the problem.

Any XP Home system that you want to access thru the network will
need
the
Guest
account activated. Not thru the Control Panel applet either.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate>

Before I set Guest account have question.
When I Run-CMD the screen within CMD reads C:\Documents and
Settings\user>
Should I just go ahead and type in;
net user AccountName /active:yes
(Substitute actual account name for "AccountName"), your instructions
or
should I change anything/path?
I'm also guessing the account name would be "wabash1"?????

2.
I recheck "File and print sharing MS network" and Browse Master is
Disabled
on both 98se's.
Should I disable BM on my xp? If so, how. As stated before, I can
see
wabash1 from wabash3, I just can't into it.
Just checked my xp, CP, Admin, Services, computer browser and it is
set
to
"AUTOMATIC".

If you have multiple computers, and you want the Network
Neighborhood
display to
be reliable, you have to tune the browser setup on the LAN. Having
too
many
browsers will cause problems. Run browstat on Windows XP, and make
sure
you
don't have a conflict. The Wabash3 to Wabash1 error is symptomatic
of
this
problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

have d/l browstat.zip to mydocs-downloads folder.
Not real sure what to do next. unzip where?
Also, will running this program have any chance of 'screwing"
anything
up?
Again, I don't want to do anything remotely possible of messing up
the
system.

3.
I had Norton System Works on the 2 98se but after reading several
newgroups
I uninstalled, cleaned, etc. and then reloaded JUST NAV 2005 as a
stand
alone. I also have Zone Alarm on all 3 systems but I'm guessing
that's
not
the problem as I can get into the 98se(wabash3) from the xp system,
I
can
see the xp(wabash1) from wabash3 but can't get into. Wabash2, next
situation, can't see anything nor can anything see it.

If you have Norton SystemWorks, or Norton AntiVirus, then you don't
have
an
overlooked firewall. If you do have Zone Alarm, then you do need
to
choose
between it and Windows Firewall (do you have SP2?). Please note
that
un
installing Zone Alarm isn't as simple as just running the un
install
wizard.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
<http://www.donhoover.net/uninstall.html>

Have ZA running instead of Windows... Not sure how I turned it off.
Where
to
find firewall wizard?(your instruction on turning off firewall). ""If
you're
going to run a third party firewall, you must disable Windows
Firewall,
but
only from the Windows Firewall wizard - do not make the mistake of
stopping
the Windows Firewall service. The Windows Firewall service breaks
several
network services, if it is stopped.""

Sp2 = yes.

I want to take a moment and say "THANK YOU" for helping with this
problem.
Hopefully we'll get it worked out AND I'm learning as we go.
thanks....

Thanks for the feedback. Learning about computers comes from working
on
them
(and fixing what you break).

Windows Firewall is disabled from the Control Panel - Security Center
applet.
Zone Alarm is un installed using the instructions provided by Don
Hoover,
if you
can't configure it properly. Some folks turn off the WF service,
which
is
the
wrong approach, which is why I put that note in there.

This thread is getting to confussing for me to keep up with so I've
copied
where we left off and hope to continue the "lesson".

ZA vs Windows firewall. I turned WFA off the correct way.
So we're back to the question under 1a and 2a.

Unzip it to "C:\Browstat". Run it as:
# Start - Run - "cmd"
# "C:\Browstat\Browstat status"

Browstat will not mess anything up. It's a diagnostic, like IPConfig.

Run it from all of your Windows XP systems please.

Will run it when I get back to work tomorrow AM and post results.
I take it you want me to do that before I worry about Guest Account
activation?.?
(Will also see if I can run it on the other machines, that aren't mine.)

The browser uses anonymous authentication, so running browstat will not
affect
Guest activation, nor vice versa. Do the two, separately, at your
convenience.

If the other computers, that aren't yours, are on your LAN, that could be
part
of the problem. Please read my article (yes, it's long, but the subject
is
complex):

That's a good start. Now, browstat is most useful when run from multiple
computers. You're using it to research a possible browser conflict, so running
it on as many computers as possible is a good idea.

Run "ipconfig /all" at the same time, on each computer too. Post output from
"browstat status" and from "ipconfig /all" for each computer. This will help us
look for your problem a lot more effectively.
