Next, we need to figure out what the equivalent of "net view" is on
Windows 98.

Here is ipconfig /all for all 3 system.

If you run "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt", you shouldn't have to copy and
paste into Notepad. Just run "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt" next.

But here's your problem.

That's why I asked if you were copying, or hand typing. It's acknowledging the
DHCP server, so where is it coming up with that subnet mask?

Maybe it's time to review all the options in the LSP / Winsock corruption issue.

Dunno about the thunderstorm bit (I watched one for 3 hours that was spectacular
a few years ago), but get a UPS for safety.

No thunderstorm here yesterday, but power was out for like 12 hours. A whole
huge chunk of the city, not just my neighborhood, lost it yesterday evening.
Power company told me 4 hours when I called it in. HA. No power til after I
got up this morning. :(

I'm in sunny (cold) California. It's supposed to be summer, but I didn't open
my windows til an hour ago.

Battery backup didn't help me last night, the power went out and took out the
DSL circuit too. My computers were up (for all of 5 minutes before I shut them
down), but the DSL modem was blinking, couldn't get sync. :(

Next, we need to figure out what the equivalent of "net view" is on
Windows 98.

Here is ipconfig /all for all 3 system.

Most of the folks I help have Windows XP systems. Let's try what we can here,
if we can't figure it out, then you might want to try posting in
microsoft.public.win98.networking and see if there's any help available there.

I don't think you'll find as much traffic in mpw98n and you do here in mpwxnw,
but you might want to start browsing thru there - there are a number of
references to "reload tcp/ip, I don't know what will work for you.

The subnet mask discrepancy is definitely one problem you gotta solve though.
Or you'll end up (gasp) having to load NetBEUI on all computers.

questions to catch up.

1. What is "wrong" with the Subnet Mask setting on wb2?
********************************
But here's your problem.*******************************
It appears the subnet Mask setting should be 255.255.255.0 as is wb1 &
wb3....

When I compare the setting (ipconfig /all) for the 3 systems, esp. wb2 &
wb3(98se's) the information is not the same.
wb3- there are two IP Address and Subnet Mask settings. WINS Proxy is "YES"
on wb1 but not wb2.
There is no Node Type, WINS Proxy showing on wb3.
2. Is this "normal"?

Most of the folks I help have Windows XP systems. Let's try what we can
here,
if we can't figure it out, then you might want to try posting in
microsoft.public.win98.networking and see if there's any help available
there.

I don't think you'll find as much traffic in mpw98n and you do here in
mpwxnw,
but you might want to start browsing thru there - there are a number of
references to "reload tcp/ip, I don't know what will work for you.

The subnet mask discrepancy is definitely one problem you gotta solve
though.

I don't know a lot about Windows 9x, unfortunately. And I can't look at your
computers directly, only thru your hands and eyes.

We need to figure out what's different between Wabash2 and Wabash3.

A WINS Proxy is a computer that can help resolve name queries for computers that
aren't WINS enabled, on a network that uses WINS. Since you don't have WINS,
this isn't useful to you. Wabash1 is Unknown, and Wabash2 is Broadcast - these
are compatible.

<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=160177>

Look at the components listed in Local Area Connection - Properties on all 3
computers. Compare the list on each, and list here.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html
but isn't this for XP systems?
How about 98se's?

L.

It's mostly for XP. WinsockFix works for Windows 9x, and I think
LSP-Fix
does.

Reloading TCP/IP may be a bit tricky though. Can you find your
Windows
Cab
directory?
<http://support.lanset.com/troubleshooting/tcpwin9598.htm>

Most of the folks I help have Windows XP systems. Let's try what we
can
here,
if we can't figure it out, then you might want to try posting in
microsoft.public.win98.networking and see if there's any help
available
there.

I don't think you'll find as much traffic in mpw98n and you do here in
mpwxnw,
but you might want to start browsing thru there - there are a number
of
references to "reload tcp/ip, I don't know what will work for you.

The subnet mask discrepancy is definitely one problem you gotta solve
though.
Or you'll end up (gasp) having to load NetBEUI on all computers.

questions to catch up.

1. What is "wrong" with the Subnet Mask setting on wb2?
********************************
But here's your problem.
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.40
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
*******************************
It appears the subnet Mask setting should be 255.255.255.0 as is wb1 &
wb3....

When I compare the setting (ipconfig /all) for the 3 systems, esp. wb2 &
wb3(98se's) the information is not the same.
wb3- there are two IP Address and Subnet Mask settings. WINS Proxy is
"YES"
on wb1 but not wb2.
There is no Node Type, WINS Proxy showing on wb3.
2. Is this "normal"?

I don't know a lot about Windows 9x, unfortunately. And I can't look at
your
computers directly, only thru your hands and eyes.

We need to figure out what's different between Wabash2 and Wabash3.

A WINS Proxy is a computer that can help resolve name queries for
computers that
aren't WINS enabled, on a network that uses WINS. Since you don't have
WINS,
this isn't useful to you. Wabash1 is Unknown, and Wabash2 is
Broadcast -
these
are compatible.
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...00/server/reskit/en-us/cnet/cncd_win_vzlw.asp>
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=160177>

Look at the components listed in Local Area Connection - Properties on
all
3
computers. Compare the list on each, and list here.

You're not going to believe this BUT wb2 is working........

When I had the power failure yesterday, everything was "online".
When I came in this AM and powered up all system, wb2 (ZA) said I had a
new
internet connect address. I gave it permission to connect and now I can
see
and get into all system/files that are set for sharing.
Ran ipconfig /all and the Sunet Mask on wb2 and the Subnet Mask is now
255.255.255.0

What is going on??
Believe me, I'm not complaining but would like to know what happened.
Maybe you should post a way to "fix" something is wait for a power
failure.
:)

Oh, good morning..

L.

How interesting. Let's see if it lasts, and be thankful for small
blessings.

Maybe use Everest (free) and get full reports from each computer, so we
have
something to compare against in the future.

Hope you had a good week-end.
Should we continue?
L.

Please start by rerunning "ipconfig /all" on all 3 computers, and
make
sure that
all of each gets posted precisely as provided. Don't hand type,
be
sure
to copy
and paste.

Next, we need to figure out what the equivalent of "net view" is
on
Windows 98.

L.

If you run "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt", you shouldn't have to
copy
and
paste into Notepad. Just run "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt" next.

But here's your problem.
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.40

That's why I asked if you were copying, or hand typing. It's
acknowledging the
DHCP server, so where is it coming up with that subnet mask?

Maybe it's time to review all the options in the LSP / Winsock
corruption
issue.

I personally run Full reports ("All pages") in Text, and save each one for
future reference. Text takes up very little room, and lasts a long time.

I will pass on your idea of routinely using an electrical storm to cure
problems. But it was useful this time. ;-}

Brings up another question.
Should I think about forming a different workgroup?

This question gets asked periodically. The only real significance of a
workgroup is defining what computers get displayed directly under Network
Neighborhood. All computers on your subnet are displayed under Entire Network,
and without a domain, access to each computer is by local accounts anyway (which
is Guest, IIRC, on your LAN).

You'd have to enable the browser on Wabash1, if you wanted Wb1, Wb2, and Wb3 to
see each other. Do you access Server on your neighbors network? Who owns the
Internet service?

I realize that all systems would still be accessable but for ease of what
shows up under NN, I thought it may be best.
Actually, it really doesn't matter at this point, just asking.
I can 'see" the server on all my systems.
We both share the iternet service. The modem along with everything else,
routers, etc. are on his side of the fence.
After reading several articles, it would appear that I would have to network
these 3 systems together and then tap into just the modem. I can get another
router but not sure if I would need to set up another server for these 3 or
how that would work.?.

May be "best" to just leave well-enough alone for now and see what happens.
L.

Again, thanks for your help and education. Will be in sunny Cali. next week.

Chuck,

Just a fast update before we leave for Cali.

Everything is still working OK with wb3.
The only thing I can think of was the network setting in ZA was incorrect
AND I took out a LAN card that was in the machine when I had it hardwired
before installing the wireless card.
Maybe the electrical storm did reset things?

Anyway, again many thanks,

L.
