search companion

It's a little difficult to explain, but it involves the
search companion window that is on the side.

Whenever I shutoff, logoff, or restart the computer and
start up ie 6, the search companion is on. I unclick it,
so the window on the side disappears, so if i close ie
then open it later, say after a standby, the search
window is still gone, no problem. But if I restart, or
logoff, the search window comes right back when I open ie.

What is messed up with it.

if I restart, or logoff, the search window comes right back when I open ie.

Once the window is set up the way you like it hold down a Ctrl- key
and close the window by clicking on the Close box.
Verify that that was the last instance of IE to close
by opening Task Manager (e.g. press Ctrl-Shift-Esc)
and checking the Processes tab to make sure that
iexplore.exe is no longer listed. (Press I on that tab
enough times to doublecheck that.)

Note to lurkers: I am assuming the OS is XP because
of the mention of Search Companion. Users of other OS may
not be able to use these shortcuts and keyboard procedures
and have to find appropriate analogs.

Good luck
