Saving Pictures from the web

when i save pictures from the web it always saves as a bitmap and i cant
change it, as i want to save the files as jpegs. When i try to change the
file type on the save picture screen it only says bitmap as the file type i
can use. Is there an option so it will let me choose which file type i can
save my pictures? as it hasnt always been like this.
