Cannot Save to my desktop

I have a new computer with Windows XP. When I right click on a picture I
want to save and choose .bmp (bitmap), the picture saves to my PC in a
totally unreadable format. On my old computer with Windows 98, I could do
this and get a bitmap file that I could open with a photo editor.

I've also noticed that when I download a picture that gets sent to me in an
e-mail, it saves in an unreadable format. On my Windows 98 machine these
pictures save as .jpg files.

What do I need to do to fix this?

What is the "unreadable" format?

What program are you trying to view the images with?

Thanks, John. After I posted I searched some more of the old threads and
tried most of these things. Right now, things seem to be OK after I changed
my settings on AOL to not compress graphic images.
The only thing is that some images online are saved as .art files and can
only be saved as .art or .bmp. On my PC (Dell Dimension running Windows XP
Professional) I can't open or preview them with anything. I've tried
Paintbrush, Corel, Zoom (the picture editor that came with my Canon camera),
Microsoft Pictures - nothing works, all show "Cannot show preview" if the
file is saved as .bmp.
At least .jpg files are better for now.
