saving pictures from the internet

I need a little bit of help, I reformatted my drive,
reinstalled AOL, now it seems whenever I try and save a
picture, whether it be a JPEG or BITMAP format, it saves
the pictures as a "dead picture." XP wont recognize it
at all, and a lot of the pictures I try and save, I try
and save them as a BITMAP so that they can be saved and
used as future wallpaper. If anyone knows the solution
to this, please contact me. Thanks

Maybe the following articles will shed some light:

And BTW...all images that are saved in
your My Pictures folder are available in
your Desktop Background list. An image
does not have to be saved as a .bmp in
order to use it as a desktop background.
