Safe Start

In Windows XP Home, SP2, how do I get into Safe Start.

'Help' says during boot, when you see the message 'please select the
operating system to start', press F8. The problem is that the Windows XP
logo obscures any system messages. So I repeatedly press F8, but it boots
into the normal desk top. Is there an alternative way of getting safe
start?

You are waiting too long. Either start tapping F8 repeatedly very
shortly after the computer starts up or you can use the System
Configuration Utility to set /Safe Boot. Look on the boot.ini tab.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

Timing is everything when try to boot to SAFE MODE.
Reboot your computer and as soon as the screen goes black repeatedly and
rapidly press the F8 key. That will get you to SAFE MODE. The trick is to
press F8 after the pc shuts Windows down and Before it begins the boot up
process, but as I said, timing is everything, that's why I just start
hitting that F8 key as soon as the screen turns black. Once you get the
hang of it, you will be able to tell when to press F8 without having to do
it as soon as the screen goes black.

To clarify what "help' tells you..
depending on how you have your pc set to boot..mine is not set to have me
'select an operating system' and from the sounds of it yours is set the same
as mine, meaning you are not going to get that message, it's not obscured by
the Windows Logo..it simply is not there...unless you have a dual boot w/2
operating systems that is.

The setting for that is in the system BIOS, and although I can't remember
what it's called..quick, or quiet boot..something like that..that's where
the option is located.

Hi Peter,

Remember not all machines use the F8 key to get into safe mode, I have come
across machines that use the F2 key, consult your computers user manual for
the correct key, most are F8 but sometimes they are F2.

After lot of trial and error I have found that for my Dell Inspiron 8200, it
is F5 that activates Safe Start.
