SAFE MODE

I have XP home edition. How can I boot up in safe mode? The so called
'Help and Support' has nothing but garbage (see below) in regard to this
which is quite surprising. In the first place when you click on Start,
there is no 'Shut Down' option. And if there was, by clicking on shutdown,
there is no additional drop down menu - the PC simply shuts down!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP?

THANKS

To start the computer in safe mode

1.. You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not
be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
2.. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click
Shut down.
3.. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
4.. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start,
press F8.
5.. Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and
then press ENTER.
6.. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the
installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press
ENTER.

It's NOT "garbage", it's EXACTLY how you do it. the only thing it doesn't
mention is to tap F8 repeatedly until the menu appears....

what planet are you on !? IF THE INSTRUCTIONS AS WRITTEN CANNOT ACHIEVE THE
DESIRED OBJECTIVE THEN THEY ARE PLAIN RUBBISH. DON'T TRY AND DEFEND MS BY
SUGGESTING THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE OK APART FROM THE PART THAT ACTUALLY
TAKES YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GET TO! WHAT BIZARRE LOGIC.

In my normal job I have to write SOP's (standard operating procedures). The
format and sequence of instruction has to be clear and logical in order to
arrive at the required destination.

Please show me how the instructions in 'Help and Support' logically and
clearly guide me towards my objective: booting up in safe mode.

Either the instructions are lost in translation due to it being written in
american English or it is plainly gobblygook ( a UK English expression).

Then I pity your readers. What are you, RAF?

1. Switch on.
2. Tap F8 repeastedly until menu appears
3. Select "Safe Mode"

that's a very short precis of what the Help and support said in slightly
more verbose manner.

For someone who allegedly writes SOPs you have a very low level of
comprehension skills....

IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING EXERCISE TO SURVEY OTHER READERS TO DETERMINE IF
THEY AGREE WITH YOUR OPINION.

MOST PEOPLE ON THIS SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC REGARD THE 'HELP AND SUPPORT'
FACILITY AS USEFUL AS A DENTIST WITH PARKINSON'S.

Most people don't even know how to begin to open Help and Support, let alone
use it.

These instructions assume that you are using the traditional Windows
logon panel, the one asking for you to type in your userid, password,
and not the Welcome screen where you click on your userid. I agree
that Windows should offer instructions for both modes. It appears that
you are using the Welcome screen. Here is how you get to Safe Mode.
(I'm doing this from memory. Currently I'm on a traditional style
box.)

1) Click Start > Shut Down.
2) You should see the dialog with the options: Stand-by, Shut down,
and Restart. Select Restart.
3) After Windows shuts down, your computer will restart. As soon as it
gets past the POST messages, start repeatedly pressing F8.
4) The logon options list should be displayed. Select the desired Safe
Mode option and press Enter.

I repeat that I'm doing this from memory. It should be fairly close to
these steps.

Whenever I've got stuck and used it it's got me sorted. The main problem
with helping someone is that no two computers are the same. You may all have
XPhome SP2 but you will find so many differences.

Hi housetrained

I thought that one XPhome Ed SP2 with all the updates would be the same as
any other on someone else's PC?

Anyway, the debate is in regard to the instructions provided in Help Support
centre and the way they have been written - see my original mail where I cut
and pasted the instructions.

Oh dear. Tascali uk. That's getting to be as much a refuge of DORKS as
NTL.....

what a waste of space - no point debating with someone who's head is so far
up were the sun don't shine that all other opinions are automatically deemed
invalid.
Get a life.

No, you thought wrong, when you start to personalize your computer then
things change - within days no two computers are the same. Take shortcuts,
for example. On my computer if I go; ctrl alt d, guess what comes up? My
diary!

Tell you what - have you got the original packaging your computer came
in? If so, pack it up, take it back to where you got it from and ask the
very nice man there if he would kindly exchange it for an Etch-A-Sketch
- it seems that's about the limit of your intelligence....

Thanks for the advice - it works. You have a good memory!

And that is PRECISELY the instructions that you posted from Help and
Support....geee what a MORON! I just hope I never have to act on your
