Running task not appear at toolbar

I have a problem in my computer, although it is not a servious one. Normally,
when we start a program for example start Winword, an icon should be created
at the task list toolbar. However, whatever I have started, there is no icon
created at the task list toolbar, but the program is running normally. It is
very inconvient when switching between programs. Can anyone kindly help me?
I am using Windows XP
