Running an old program (DOS) on Xp

Hi,

I'm trying to ran an old (DOS) program on
this machine (Gateway P3 667 MHz under XP professional)

The program requires EMS and I'm providing it.
It does not run.
(nor does it run on another machine under Windows 2000 professional )
The complain is:
"memory manager module failed to initialize"

This program does run on
Dell P4 1.8GHz under XP Home edition.

I copied, to the best of my ability, the Dell's setting.
(Auto, auto....)

Any advise?

Copy the DOS exe program to your hard disk. Right click on
the exe file and select properties. There will be a
compatibility tab. Select the appropriate settings.

Thanks, Jim,

I got the fundamentals.
It does work on Win 98 and on Win XP home version.
(No need to deviate from Auto or use win 95 compatibility)

It does not on XP pro and does not on Win 2000 pro.
I believe I copied, verbatim, every possible entry.
I even examine differences between the config.nt files
between my XP home (working) and XP Pro (not working)
So no differences nor a reference to EMS.

Back to the computer complain...
"memory manager module failed to initialize"
How can I "help / set correctly etc. the memory manager?

There should be no difference between XP Home or Pro as far
as running the program, but different computers may have
different setting in the boot.ini ,system.ini and win.ini
files. Check in msconfig to see what differences you have
between the two systems.

You need to add the reference to ems with a registry edit.
Exactly what and where it needs to, I'm not sure.

Is it pssible that this machine has more RAM than the other PCs, on which
the program runs? I ask because I ran into a win31 vintage interactive
picture CD that failed if the RAM was too large. It worked on XP home on an
old gateway, but failed on a newer machine, also running the same version
adn service pack of XP.

The program on the CD apparently check the RAM size, but interpretted my
1Gig of RAM as a negative number, and things went downhill from there. This
was not an XP issue, but a hardware-too-new-for-software problem. I suspect
that other hardware incompatiblitiies could exist with DOS-age programs ans
some PCs.

In my case, the picture CD vendor sent me a new DVD-based progam that was
fully compatible with the modern PC. You might inquire of the DOS program
vendor, whether the offer an update, upgrade, or at least some advice. It
only costs you an email.

Same memory (and not that much) : 384 Mg.

The idea that something in the "pro" is different came
from the fact that 200 pro and XP pro did not work.
Looking through msconfif (in win. ini & sys.ini)
I see no reference to EMS.

Above that if the machines complaint is:
"memory manager module failed to initialize"
why can't I focus on that.
What makes the "memory manager module" to initialize.
What makes it not to.
Etc.

Any ideas?
