Running a Windows 95 Program in Windows XP

Hi again all,

I am wanting to run and older Windows 95 APP (Armor Payroll System
Module ver. 4.01 from Excalibur Suite version PROO 3.2) on my new
Windows XP system. I first tried to dual boot by taking the windows 95
HDD out and putting it into my new system and using Osloader 2000.
While it seemed to work, whenever I booted into Windows 95, the HDD
light would flash a few times then the computer would get stuck at the
windows 95 logo screen and just stay there.

I then just removed Osloader 2000 and let windows XP see the Windows 95
HDD in "My computer". I can then peruse the Windows 95 HDD and even
start the APP, which brings up a Command box and the program menu but
when I select any of the menu options to start or open a file it closes
the command line box and nothing happens.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have not yet started to
upgrade to a newer payroll system (being the middle of the year and
all) so was wondering what else I could try?

It seems to me the reason your first (dual boot) attempt failed is
because you are running Win 95 on different hardware from what it was
installed on.

Your second attempt (running the app under XP) is probably doomed to
failure (regardless of use of the compatibility wizard) because you
haven't installed and registered the payroll app under the XP OS.
Registry settings made in the Win 95 registry when you installed the
app won't be seen by XP, and nor will any components (.ocx, .dll files
etc.) in the Win 95 system directory that it needs.

I think you will either have to reinstall 95 on the new hardware,
install the app under XP, or carry on using it on the old computer
until it's time to upgrade the software.

Remove the old HDD. Load the application to the XP system and if it doesn't
work try running it in 95 compatible mode.
