Are these home PC's? if so looks like the virus was playing with your registry.

Try the following,

Open a command prompt (CMD) from accessories menu -> type "gpedit.msc" expand the user configuration node -> expand admin templates -> click "Start Menu and Taskbar -> int he right pane look for "remove run menu from start menu from start menu" it should be set to "not configured" if it is double click it set to enable, click apply, then set to disable and click apply. if it's set to enabled then set to disable. Reboot and see if run's back on the start menu.

Let me know what happens.

Run Command Missing

Thanks a ton Techy. Now my problems are solved.

They both are home PC's. But one problem is still pending. When I try to open the folder options I am not able to find it in the window. Instead of Folder options i can find only Network drive options like ( Map network drive..Disconnect Network drive.., Synchronize..)

It all started after i got infected by that virus. Is there any solution for this problem?

you can probably that the same way as above, it's just finding the option. the other way to solve problems like this is to delete and recreate your profile.

This is how I got rid of quickinfo virus. I got it from another forum. I am pasting the same for your reference.

Please download free Trial of Superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it.
close the program

Please download ATF Cleaner:

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Download and install DrWebCureit:

to your desktop.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad as you will be in Safe Mode and unable to refer to this page.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded.
The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All

After the scan, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.

Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Start Superantispyware/rightclick on the black/yellow bug in tray.

Hit - Scan Your Computer - button

Click on the drive(s) you want to scan. Put a check in - Perform Complete Scan, then next

I have a computer given to me from a friend - the run menu is also missing form my start menu. I have asked other people, and they recommend someyhing like going into regestry editor and editing something called norun from 1 to 0. How can I get into registry editor, if i can find run? I have again asked some people hw to do this and they say to do somethig with the c drive in my computer, however its missing also. Im not sure what you are saying about a command prompt as well.

I am quite new to computers and computer talk, so go easy.

I appreciate all your help.

ah

ok - I realsie what a command promp is now. But it is missing as well from the accessories menu! I have also noticed another few odd things. Namely the control panel has only got folder options, and printers... and Ctrl-Alt -Del ISNT isnt working!

I am not sure this is a virus - just the previous owner blocked these things. I think this because I cant access the internet from the computer.

Could it be a virus anyway?

Cheers

It is a virus called quickinfo. You will be affected with this virus if you get a link www.quickinfonews site. It comes through yahoo messenger. Once it is affected if you try to use any USB storage devices then it will get tranferred to that and will attack the next system. So even after removal of the virus you will have to clean all the USB devices used in the system.

It will show all the symptoms which you told, like the default page will become quickinfor page, the run command will disappear, ctrl + alt+ del wont work & the folder options will disappear.

Need help please. - Programs affected

I think I have same issue. I have done the first option and changed the settings and the turn off and run command came back. But now when I open say Adobe CS it says this: You are not allowed to continue because your account dose not have the proper privileges. Please log in using an account with administrator privileges and try again.

How do I fix this issue. I do have admin right and I checked.

Please let me know soon as I am stuck unable to do anything now.

Tim,
Is it a company PC or a personal one?I think you will have to log in as administrator. Then you try the same steps...
