Hi,

What you describe is a vulnerability from August of 2003 that was exploited
by the W32/Blaster.worm. To fix this problem, perform the following steps:

1. Go to WindowsUpdate.com and download ALL of the latest patches. If your
computer tries to shut down at any time during this, go to the Start menu,
and then Run. Type in "shutdown -a" (without the quotes) and press OK.

2. Install the patches.

3. If you don't have an updated antivirus program, get a new one or update
your old one. This is important, because it is probable that you will be
infected by worms that appeared after W32/Blaster.worm.

Hope this helps. Feel free to post back if you need more assistance.

Sincerely,

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
enabled a firewall, without having first installed an antivirus
application with current virus definition files, and before installing
the KB824146 Hotfix, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
