roller coaster tycoon 3

Hi,

We have recently been given a computer with win xp 2002 home edition
installed

Most of the personal stuff has been deleted. What is left is working fine.

My son has tried to load his copy of RCT 3 onto the pc (without us knowing,
he is 13)

This is O.K, but it will not work.

I have had a look and it is listed in start>programs as Atari, but when the
menu draw opens it says EMPTY in grey.

I have looked in c>program files and Atari>RCT 3 is listed and all the
individual files look to be there o.k.

I have looked in add/remove programs intending to uninstall and reinstall
but it is not listed there.

Any ideas? Steve

First thing I'd try to do (as it sounds like the install process didn't
finish), is install it again.

Make sure to jot down any error messages, just encase it was the installer
last time failing, then we can troubleshoot from there.

If when you insert the game's disc and the autorun window pops up and thinks
it's already installed - go to My Computer -> right click the CD drive ->
select browse and run the setup program directly, that should force a fresh
install.

Hi Paul,

We visit "Clarks village" now and then, just up the road.

Somehow I imagined all mvp's were in the states

Thanks for the reply, - have tried >right click on cd drive where there is
an"autorun" on the menu, there is not infact a "browse".

Clicking autorun starts the installation wizard ok, working through to type
in the security key from the cd cover and then starting the install works
ok.

BUT, the install hangs up about half way through, stalling at
c:\shared\attachment R_MO1.common.ovl.

After a few minutes this message appears:- COMPONENT TRANSFER ERROR

Component euro
Filegroup euro
File D:\data2.cab

ERROR the request could not be performed because of an I/O device
error

I have tried to load in french and german, but it stalls in a similar place,
although the error string is slightly different

There are a few scratches on the disc.

Is it possible to manually load and skip the part that hanging up, or do you
know if it is possible to download.

Many thanks on a over cast and dank south country day.

I think there's about 200 in the UK and Ireland.

It's called explore, not browse. Too late for me to be posting. But as
it's trying to install no matter. :)

Yeah the computer is having some issues copying the data over. Unless the
scratches on the disc are pretty deep they shouldn't be a problem, so the
drive may be a bit iffy and it might be an idea to run a lens cleaner
through it at some point.

But in the mean time try copying all of the disc's contents over to the hard
drive manually, 'explore' the disc from My Computer and copy the contents
over to say your desktop - then run the setup program from there, once it's
installed it's safe to delete from your desktop.

If the you get a copying error, when you go to copy the files from the disc
over - then it looks like it's a problem with either the disc or the drive.

If it copies over successfully - but you hit the error when installing
again. One last thing I can think of to try. Boot the machine in safe
mode. To do this, start the machine up and press F6 just before you would
normally get the Windows XP loading screen, you should get an option to boot
in 'safe mode' select that and Windows with boot with the raw basics needed
to work. Then try running the setup.

If that fails, try the disc in another machine. If it installs I'd
recommend copying data2.cab from the machine it works in onto CD or thumb
drive etc and then using the good data2.cab to replace the bad one, you'd
need to copy the disc back over to your hard drive again, then copy the good
data2.cab over the existing one.

If I don't make any sense, just ask away and I'll try and do a better job of
explaining.

Hey we had some sun today.
