Right Click On Desktop

Hi:

Recently when I right click my desktop the cursor hour glass just hangs
for the longest with no apparent reason at all.
I can right click on an icon and it opens immediately, but when I right
click on desktop I get the hour glass etc.

Any recommendations to resolve will be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you recently installed or upgraded software? The problem could be
anything from a shell extension to display driver software (for example,
NVIDIA adds a special menu to the Desktop context menu).

I freely admit that I'm grasping at straws here... But this advice
does, at least, stem from problems I've seen in the past. You could try
running NirSoft ShellExView (
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html ), sort on the Microsoft
column, and selectively disable third-party shell extensions, to see
which among them may be causing the problem.

Hi:

You hit the nail right on the head! I installed the ShellExView program,
as recommended. The second item I disabled was NVIDIA Desktop Explorer
version 6.14.10.4663 and now when I right click on the desktop I get the
screen immediately without the hour glass hanging etc.

Now that I know the culprit what do I do? If I leave NVIDIA Desktop
Explorer disabled what are the consequences?.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the consequences are, because I'm not familiar with
the NVIDIA Desktop Explorer. A very terse Google search implies that it
may be a virtual desktop feature of the NVIDIA display drivers, but then
again, sometimes they lump other functions under the same executable
file, so I don't feel safe assuming that.

The only thing I can suggest at this point is to (1) try a different
NVIDIA driver version (even reverting to an older version, if possible
and practical). You could (2) try uninstalling/reinstalling this
version (people love recommending that, don't they?), but I very
seriously doubt that will help. The option number (3) would be to leave
the NVIDIA Desktop Explorer disabled, and see what happens.

Maybe the NVIDIA drivers provide some inherent way to disable the
Desktop Explorer. Poke around whatever options NVIDIA provides for its
display driver package (i.e. in the Display Properties applet).

Hi:

Thanks again for all your info, as at least now I know what is causing my
problem. I think that I am just going to leave it disabled and see what
ensues. As of now, everything seems fine.

Thanks very much for taking the time to provide me with all the info that
you did.

Salute!

Disable the other four as well.

Open ShellExView and disable the Nvidia right click Menu entries.
These five entries...
Extension Name: Desktop Explorer
Extension Name: Desktop Explorer Menu
Extension Name: DesktopContext Class
Extension Name: NVIDIA CPL Extension
Extension Name: nView Desktop Context Menu

Hope this helps. Let us know.
