Removing popup URLs from address bar.

Cycle

I am having difficulty trying to remove one particular troublesome url that
pops up in the dropdown list from the address bar in Internet Explorer
6.0.2900, SP2 with WinXP Pro.

The troublesome url starts (after the www bit) with the letter r. Whenever I
type in a new url that starts with r, the troublesome url pops up as an
alternative.

In the attempt to remove this troublesome url, I have tried the following.

Cleared History and Temporary Internet Files, via Tools, Internet Options,
General tab.

Looked in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs, but found
nothing.

Cleared Start - Run entries, via Control Panel, Taskbar and Start Menu,
Customise, Clear List.

Searched for this troublesome word, from Start, Search, Only search file
names (no result); and from Search anywhere in the file (one result,
"cleanup.log", but can't find any mention of the troublesome word in this
path).

Searched the registry for the troublesome word. Got two results, as below.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products
then a lot of mixed numbers and letters. The 'Name' is SymUIHIp, and 'Data'
contains a long mixture of letters and numbers amongst which is the
troublesome word - not on its own but just as part of the long mixture.

HKLM path as above as far as Products, then a different string of mixed
numbers and letters. Here the 'Name' is Norton-Systemworks, and the 'Data'
is a very long line of mixed characters. The troublesome word I have not
been able to observe here.

Ran an application called WindowWasher which locates and empties index.dat
files.

The troublesome word pops up in one User Account only; other user accounts
on the same computer are not affected.

What further action would help?

Regards.

Vincenzo,

I tried all the "manual" actions you suggested, without any success.

Then I tried Free History Eraser, and it was successful - the problem url
has gone. I am delighted.

Well done, many thanks for your kind help.

Regards,

Cycle.
