Remote assistance - connectiong and taking control

I have been working to get remote assistance to work and have had limited
success. Could use a little assistance - trying to support a friend through
the internet.

Setup
Both computers running XP home - sp2
Both running netgear router

What seesm to be working...
I discovered the IP address of my computer on the internet port
I port forwarded port 3389 to the IP of the computer I am using -- in this
case 192.168.0.2
I went into Help and Support and created a file, saved it then modified it
to reflect the IP address of the internet port since the address it imbedded
was the IP of the computer (192.168.0.2).
I emailed this file to my friend and he can connect to my computer but he
cannot take control. (can't figure out why not)
My computer is setup to allow remote control.

What does not work...
When I try through Messenger it fails saying it cannot resolve the address.
This occurs when I send a request or when my friend does.

Ultimately I want to control his computer. I will need to find out his LAN
port IP but I was hoping that I could send him a request and then take
control of HIS computer. Not sure if that is possible though.

Thanks for the help

That won't work, he has to initiate. Have him create a file, and do not
modify it. If messenger is failing to connect, then I suspect the port
forwarding on one of the two systems is not setup correctly.

That IP is one used for your machine in your LAN - and hence to the
router. You need the one the router exhibits to the outer world

Rick,

Pardon the intrusion here but I thought Remote assistance was limited to
users running XP Pro at least on one PC.

Can two machines, each running XP Home, use Remote assistance?

Thanks, Fred

Hi,

Remote Assistance is available on all WinXP systems.

Remote Desktop is limited to WinXP Pro systems (though any machine Win95 and
up can be used to access it).

Rick:

Thanks for the help. Since he has a router, I am assuming that I will need
to find the IP on his system that is presented to the "outside world" and
then map his "PC" IP to port 3389. When he creates the file and emails it to
me will it not contain the PC IP and therefore I will need to enter his
"outside world" IP?

It sounds like if the port forwarding is setup correctly on both computers
then messenger will work?

Yes, you assume correctly.

Yes, but he should be able to give you this.

Yes, it should.
