RegEdit Issue - Keeps Closing

When I run 'REGEDIT' it opens for a moment then closes. How can I fix that?
I'm trying to remove Norton and need to do it manually.

Cheers!

Get rid of the malware that you have. Have you installed another AV
appliction before trying to rid yourself of Norton? If not, do so, and
soon.

[[When you open System Configuration Utility [MSCONFIG], Registry Editor or
Task Manager, they flash for a second and quit. This symptom is caused by
Viruses.]]

Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening

Thanks for the response, I used the online scan at Panda and it turned out
nothing... system all clear. Which really makes things wierd.

Anyhow, to remove Norton I used xp_emergencyutil.zip file which I found at
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm through a thread here. I
was then able to make another copy of my REGEDIT which is what I used to edit
and remove my old version of Norton.

I've since installed the new 2007 Norton and am runnng a scan now... still
looks clear. My REGEDIT still closes but I can used the copy I made to make
changes.

Soooooooo in a nutshell, I've not found any malisious applications... any
other ideas to fix my REGEDIT issue?

Cheers.

HP,

Doug Knox's xp_emegencyutil.exe creates a copy of regedit.exe renames it to
Regedit.com and places it here C:\EmergencyUtils\Regedit.com

I did that a long time ago myself, just in case.

Try this.

Start | Run | Type: %windir% and click OK |
Scroll down to regedit.exe.
Size the window so that you can see your Desktop.
Drag regedit.exe to your Desktop.
Wait a minute and scroll clear to the bottom of C:\WINDOWS
Windows File Protection should place a new copy regedit.exe at the bottom.

If you do not see a new regedit.exe in C:\WINDOWS, drag the one on your
Desktop back to C:\WINDOWS.

If you did see a new regedit.exe in C:\WINDOWS, delete the regedit.exe that
you dragged to your Desktop.

Now open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click on System in the left hand pane
You should see Windows File Protection entry listed under Information.
Double click on the Windows File Protection entry and you should see
something like this.

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file
c:\windows\regedit.exe. This file was restored to the original version to
maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is
5.1.2600.1106

Let us know if that helped or not.
